Pasok reasoning is allegedly "PASOK considers citizens have downvoted the party’s policies therefore it can not join a pure ND-PASOK government" that sounds quite honourable ... Of course it sounds quite honourable. They are hardly going to say "We really should go into government but if we prop up a conservative government our last shred of credibility on the left will be gone for good"

I know, I know. Wont it be great if Greece beat Germany? Football will mimic life. Germany will hump Greece. FC Bayern München Germany looked a bit ropey against Denmark this evening.

Syriza not joining a government in any circumstances. After meeting with Samaras this is what Tsipras had to say
"I will not join a coalition government. I told Samaras that it would be a catastrophe to continue with cuts to wages and pensions. Democracy must resist violent acts [two hand grenades were thrown at Skai TV building yesterday]. We have very difficult moments until June 28 [EU leaders' summit]. We now have better [bailout] negotiation opportunities. Greece must take advantage of this. We respect the election result.
A government must be formed based on New Democracy because that is what the people wanted - but they will be judged by the people. Country must have a government tonight. We will be a powerful opposition, we will control government. Whoever takes the responsibility to form a government, takes the responsibility to negotiate [bailout]. We will not use mandate if Samaras fails to form a coalition government."

However there seems little option but a PASOK-ND Government.. It all depends if the Democratic Left will at least support the coalition. It is probably fair that the two parties who created the situation should be charged with clearing it up.

It would seem that the Lady's not for turning. Merkel says
- New Greek government has to fulfull the commitments Greece has made to its international lenders
- Expects quick formation of new, stable government in Greece
- Cannot accept any loosening on agreed reform pledges in Greece after election

Think you'll find that things were a little more complicated than that.

Make the buggers work 6 days a week says the IMF.

Which I don't particularly understand the value of. Surely if workers switch to a 6-day week, all that will happen is that each worker will produce extra output, and as a result firms will just lay off staff that they no longer require thanks to the increase in marginal productivity of their remaining employees. So, no extra growth, and even more unemployment...

Were you expecting sensible suggestions from the IMF?

12% for Golden Shower is beyond horrific, especially when you realise that there's a good chance that the number will keep on rising. As for PASOK, what you need to remember is that the party was essentially a personalist and (increasingly) patronage machine without much in the way of deep roots; the socialist label was very much a flag of convenience. Under the circumstances...
