As mentioned in the Argyll & Bute thread, Cllr Alister MacAlister (SNP: Dunoon) sadly passed away this morning. As with all Scottish wards, the vacancy would have been filled on 3 May by the six month rule. However, as he was a candidate for 3 May, the death of a party candidate rules mean the poll will be postponed.

Nominations closed at 4pm on Thursday 29th. Cllr McAlister died on the morning of Friday 30th.

If a nominated candidate died after they submitted their papers but before the close of noms, and prrof was given to the RO, the candidate would no longer remain validly nominated. (Rule 7(1)(b), Scottish Local Government Election Rules 2011)

Whats the cause of the other vacancy?
This complicates the predictions I made for St Albans council as the Conservatives could be down two seats leaving them needing three gains elsewhere. I had thought they were in with a moderate chance of holding the seat up this May though Labour would be favourites. I suppose in a double vacancy, if it were close, then the chances of holding one of two seats may be slightly better than holding one on it's own, but even then they are down a seat and there is a risk of losing borh. The chances of holding both are very remote I'd ahve thought

Angus Adams, (Con, Norton Ward, Dudley MBC) has sadly passed away this morning. He was up again in 2014, so there will be no delay of poll. Angus was Chair of CENTRO whilst I was a member and was a good chair who would even put up with some of my rather convoluted arguments about public transport.
