Barbara Dawson , Labour councillor for Failsworth East on Oldham MBC has sadly died . Cllr Dawson was first elected in 2004 but lost to Conservative Paul Martin by just eight votes in 2008. She regained the ward in 2010 by a majority of 1,054 and had latterly been a Cabinet member. This year Cllr Martin is not defending his seat, in fact there is no Conservative candidate at all: it's a straight fight between the late Cllr Dawson's husband David and Liberal Democrat Stephen Barrow.

It appears that there is to be another byelection in Tavistock North ward of West Devon DC as a Conservative councillor has resigned . A previous byelection on March 22nd resulted in an Independent gain . On Torridge DC a Conservative councillor has resigned from the party over a row over the Conservative leader becoming a freemason .

Results May 23rd
There were 27 "double" by-elections along with a "triple" one in Bolton.
Where a ward returned "spilt" representation, an assessment of a gain or hold has been based on whether a retiring councillor has been re-elected and then on who headed the poll, thereby having a 4 year term, and who serves for the remainder of the casual vacancy term.
