I had thought to get Doncaster out of the way first as it looked one of the least interesting of the 14 on this day- after all , a Labour defence with just a token Independent taking up the challenge- no Lib Dem or Green or UKIP, not even a Conservative. But when I looked back at past elections in this ward it looks fascinating- that relatively unusual animal, the Labour/Indy marginal. The Independents had control of the executive mayorality for part of this time, that I knew, but I hadn't expected such a very political dogfight at ward level. Independent candidates getting over 2000 votes in local elections must be quite a rare breed.I am also fascinated to see the change from all outs to annuals, and back to all outs, and how exactly that relates to Indy fortunes. I am hoping there are Doncaster pundits out there who will be able to enlighten us as to what has gone on.

Kirton Lane, Thorpe. beat me by seconds! Don't know why you couldn't find it on the website, except that its one of those local authority websites where you have to keep going from one heading to the next and then take it as a download, but that's not uncommon- this one more labyrinthine than most ,though. |

That is indeed Ex councillor Martin Williams then. Armthorpe is about 5 miles from Thorne I think.

Think this one might be 3-way marginal at first preferences, and then who knows- but maybe a unionist gain of one colour or another? |

One might think that Northamptonshire would attract some interest at this time given the extreme financial straits the County administration is currently in. Chance for the opposition parties to make inroads in the present climate both against the County Council ruling party here, and in the district by-election in the same patch? Ah but hang on the county council leader says its all the fault of the national government. So maybe the voters should take it out of the national party of government instead? Hmm..
Incidentally I can't quite get my head round Higham Ferrers being in Northamptonshire. That name sounds like it belongs in Devon, or maybe Dorset... West Country, anyway, not the bloody East Midlands.

I’m sure when we get Andrew’s Previews he’ll shed light on this, but I’m guessing there’s a connection to the Shirley family, aka Earl Ferrers, who originated from Astwell Castle in Northamptonshire. |
