Is being close to Mallon a bad thing ?? I didn't say it was (but I got the same reply on another forum, so I probably phrased it as such). I guess it's probably a bad thing for the 2-3 people who accidentally supported the mayoral Labour candidates. I have never paid much attention to Middlesbrough mayoral elections. No wonders they always lose if the best they come up with on the eve of the election (page 2): www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/2011/05/04/mohammed-bashir-on-wrangle-with-ray-mallon-84229-28632575/I also wonder if Mallon's intervention was done just to secure McDonald's place on the shortlist but I am probably reading too much into nothing. Good work! Even Emma France can't escape us

I understand that Andy McDonald is close to Ray Mallon and, I hear from Labour people, actively supported Ray's bid to become Mayor at the expense of the Labour candidate. This is mentioned frequently on bulletin boards and twitter - and Labour folk swear its true.
Andy is the only candidate from the Middlesbrough area tho...Joe Docherty lives in Tyneside, where, I understand, he lived while head of Tees Valley Regeneration (tho he had a Teesside address).

There have been rumblings that Mallon will stand if he thinks the Labour candidate isn't up to much. Mallon is still inordinately popular. Choosing his best mate in the Labour Party therefore has a certain attraction.

If Mallon is basically labour anyway I doubt many at HQ will worry too much

Cunning. Not "right", but cunning.

Cunning. Not "right", but cunning. The implication being that it's somehow "wrong"? In the absence of evidence suggesting the candidate in question is unqualified to make it on to a shortlist, why would it be wrong if he were selected?

Emma France is my very capable Vice Chair of Governors at a primary school in Haringey. She is Head of Development in Europe for a charity called mothers2mothers which works with HIV+ mothers to prevent them passing it onto their children when pregnant. She is also Chair of the MoMo Helps charity which doktorb dug up. I know she has strong family ties to the area and went to school in Guisborough. Not entirely a local candidate but a lot nearer than some!

Presumably Mahroof Hussain can't have been helped by MacShane's tribulations emerging just before the selection.

Docherty is apparently the Progress backed candidate favoured by David Miliband.
I looked back at 2010 leadership results by CLPs. Middlesbrough had one of the lowest turnouts (37.something %). I wonder why. It's also had one of the biggest shares for Diane Abbott (not that it says much considering she polled 14% here)

Docherty is apparently the Progress backed candidate favoured by David Miliband. Given that Ed Malcolm is a councillor in South Shields, I can't imagine he's overjoyed not to have the backing of his own MP.

I might use the same phraseology as Liam With one change as I have no local knowledge. 'Not right or wrong but cunning.'
I tend to assume that central party machines like to be cautious.

McDonald has won Labour selection. It wasn't close. 118 for McDonald to 64 for Docherty.
I suppose this will avoid a Mallon's challenge.

Well that's a shock
Know your place, Mallon. You don't mess with the Labour Party.

I'm told Emma France got 8 votes, Amina Ali 3 and Ed Malcolm 0. Hussain withdrew to concentrate on Rotherham. I think EdMalcolm is the chair of Unite Regional Political Committee. So I guess the militant takeover of the party by the unions through selections is currently on hold

The Liberal Democrat candidate is George Selmer.
