Any indication yet on whether this is going to be on 15 Nov or not?? Good question. I wish the parties would be a bit more expansive about when they intend to move writs.

I have heard that the writs will be moved today. Impression is that it is all including the Boro.

That would go against the local report from Croydon (referred to on the relevant thread) but we will see........

No Middlesbrough writ today (nor for Croydon North West). Would still be possible to move it tomorrow or Thursday for polling day on 15 November.

As the Middlesbrough by-election starts to get more interesting I decided to look at how the town has performed over my adult life. I've posted the observations into my blog. The post is called: Has 30 Years Of Labour Helped MiddlesbroughIn the 30 years since I left school at 15, Middlesbrough has struggled. Those years have seen Labour MPs in both constituencies, a Labour Council, a Labour government (for 40% of the time) and a Labour leaning Elected Mayor. I must stress that I am not anti-Labour. In fact I used to be a party member. Have a look at my blog newmiddlesbrough.blogspot.com and give me feedback. Thanks

O/T: Interesting excerpt from Wikipedia about Ellen Wilkinson, the Labour MP for Middlesbrough East from 1924 to 1931 (and also Jarrow from 1935 to 1947): 'In the 1924 general election, Wilkinson was elected to represent the depressed northeastern iron- and steel-making constituency of Middlesbrough East. In the House of Commons she was given the nickname of "Red Ellen", both for her hair colour and her left-wing politics. A 'class warrior', she had a reputation for being tough and charismatic. She hung a portrait of Lenin over her bed, saying, "I look at it and get cracking."'en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Wilkinson

Someone called harmonicaman has posted this comment on PB:
"Middlesbroughs Labour councillors have been openly canvassing and supporting Mallon in each of his Mayoral elections, against the Labour candidate and against Labour Party rules, even though one Labour member was expelled from the party for signing the election papers of an independent candidate last time around, the appeal against the expulsion - citing the brazen support given to Mallon was rejected - the party heirarchy are aware of the situation and allow it to continue."

Labour's shortlist for candidacy has been announced - generating much consternation locally. Here it is: Amina Ali, Mahroof Hussain, Emma France, Ed Malcolm, Joe Docherty, Andy McDonald. Only one local lad in there? I've blogged about MIddlesbrough's benefits problem and how Labour is betraying its supporters by not talking about it. You can read it here: newmiddlesbrough.blogspot.com

Interesting choices there, Joe Doherty is an unsual one for labour and would be different.
Note I would not call any of them parachutes either

Amina Ali is Co- founder of Somali Friends Labour, founder of Muslim Women for Labour, Vice Chair of Tower Hamlets CLP. Mahroof Hussain is a Cllr in Rotherham Emma France... .I don't know who she is Doktorb founds her Ed Malcolm is a Cllr in South Tyneside Joe Docherty is the former chief executive of Teess Valley Regeneration and current chair of Arts Council North East Andy McDonald is the chair of the party Local Government Committee, previously shortlisted for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland in 2010. IIRC he has also been a Cllr in Middlesbrough in the past. I suppose that McDonald and Docherty will be the top 2. On some Middlesbrough forums McDonald is "accused" (I guess by former party members...or maybe member. Online you can't never know if it's the same obsessed person or more than 1) to be "close" to Mallon. On the "local candidate" issue, it's hard to judge without knowing how many local people applied. I know one of the councillors did but it's this one www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/local/stockton/9021350.Councillor_defends_Thatcher_comments/So I am not particularly surprised the central party decided that perhaps it wasn't suitable to a by-election campaign (with increased media coverage on what candidates say or do) I believe Docherty was talked as a possible contender for the Hartlepool by-election in 2004.
