Amazed this is so quiet, given the impact it could have on Europe. Only development seems to be Forza gaining at expense of PD. I think Salvini and the southern parts of the Lega will turn out to be the story of the election, whilst all the attention is on MS5.

Well we know roughly what's going to happen, but we don't know the details. And the details are the critical thing here. Which means that for the moment there's not a lot worth saying.
It is, for instance, possible that the PD's failure to understand the electoral system that it devised might gift a freak majority to the Right. It is also possible that a rumoured PD collapse in the South might prevent that as it would mean MS5 winning seats that otherwise would have gone to the Right. Etc.

FAZ notes that turnout in the Eighties hit 90%, and was down to 73% in 2013. Apparently polls suggest that only a half of Italians aged 18-24 will vote this time: www.faz.net/aktuell/politik/ausland/parlamentswahl-in-italien-besser-wird-s-nicht-15476658.htmlI would venture that a reduced youth vote is good news for the PD and the Right, and poor news for the MS5. But who knows! Another curiosity- Renzi is a candidate not in Tuscany but in...the South Tyrol!

There's no way Krabappel is a liberal though.

There's no way Krabappel is a liberal though. I'm not sure that the comic figure being used to represent MS5 killed anyone either, unlike the comic figure who was behind MS5!

Incredibly, only the Express of all papers have a live blog up on the Italian election. And they report that 200 polling stations have failed to open!

Turnout at noon for House of Deputies is 19.38% Incredibly, only the Express of all papers have a live blog up on the Italian election. And they report that 200 polling stations have failed to open! Some polling stations had wrong ballot papers printed and they had to wait to re-print them.

Would normally be inclined to support the PD, as the only party that is not completely economically illiterate, and I particularly like Renzi. However, immigration has spiralled out of control in Italy during the last five years. Reducing these numbers needs to be priority no. 1, so I'm rooting for the Lega in this one. The only effective option this time.

I’m still backing Five Star. The complacent Italian establishment needs a metaphoric punch in the face.

Thanks for posting. Interesting but deeply flawed in many differing ways. Also far from comprehensive. What about... 1) Various Popes? 2) Hitler 3) Napoleon 4) The EU 5) The euro 6) Various Barbarians etc.?

If the South had stayed separate, and been given time to align with the North, it might have all worked out much more smoothly. Instead, millions of Italians were forced to emigrate by the economic disaster imposed by the Piedmontese and friends.

Instead, millions of Italians were forced to emigrate by the economic disaster imposed by the Piedmontese and friends. He was not 'the problem' but merely facilitated that historic trend by daring and winning because the others were do very crap. He was a mad cap chancer and should not be lauded as he is. An Italy containing much more of Savoy, a bit of upper Adriatic and most of the Ticino, yet ending with Lazio would have been so much better. The Kingdom might have seen out both Wars and then have concentrated on produce, wine and tourism greatly aided by American remittances, Marshall aid and a large influx of administrators from International institutions. That instead of benign and not so benign neglect!
