Changes: Lab +16.4% LD - 17.2% Con -7.3% UKIP +3.0% Green +1.6% BNP -1.1% People may look at UKIP and say what a good result, but is just a 3% increase that good ? On such a low turnout, and in such a blackhole for UKIP, it's a great result. As though we needed more evidence on the decline of the BNP, it's now written in the very make up of by-election results tht the party of protest is UKIP and a percentage increase in the share of the vote in Manchester is pretty good.

Congratulations to Chris on a creditable performance. You did very well! On another note though, what a completely abysmal turnout - I thought Manchester would be the lowest, but to drop below 20%

I'm forgetting that this seat includes Moston now. There must be a chance that Chris came second in that ward as the LDs are very weak there, although it would have probably registered the highest Tory vote as well

A number of people have - in my experience, and that of several others - not just stayed at home, but taken the active decision to boycott them........

Doesn't seem to have affected the turnout in Corby though, but then the marginality there would be a counter balance.

Well done to Chris for putting up a fight in such a poor seat for us and without much support from the party (by the standards of by elections). I would never say that 4.5% (with such a low turnout) is a good result but in the circumstances it is a creditable performance.

The low turnout somewhat disguised by the fact that the electorate is very high.

Working down the list, it was a fairly decent result for the Pirates as well - beating both Respect and TUSC.

Also the boundaries are less-than clear (and changed only two years ago). Lots of people didn't realise they had a by-election vote as well. Corby, I suspect, has been rather better publicised locally. I spoke to one person today who said she would have voted in the by-election if she lived in the area, and was then a little embarrassed when I pointed out she did. If you lived in Moss Side, or Ardwick, would you guess you were in Manchester Central? If you were in Cheetham, though, you might. [Certainly in Manchester, we got one polling card for both elections]

People may look at UKIP and say what a good result, but is just a 3% increase that good ? In the locals this year in the City Centre ward we were beaten by the Pirate Party and came last. Wards like Hulme and Moss Side are also awful areas for us. I really couldn't ask for more in terms of the result, considering Ardwick was also bad for us. If there was ever going to be a Parliamentary by-election in Manchester I'll always want it to be in Wythenshawe.

Tricky is sleepy and has a sore ankle. Had some fun opportunities to chat with Chris though even if he did forget for a moment that I was unlikely to be available for training sessions for UKIP

Just because your policies are all wrong doesn't mean you don't know how to fight elections .

No more by-elections in Manchester for a while please. I'd like one in Withington please.
