Usual reaction by the Labour drones to someone leaving their party , the total opposite of what they say when someone defects to them . I will be consistent , he should resign his seat and fight a byelection under his new colours otherwise he has betrayed those who voted for him as Labour .

He use to post quite frequently on Labourlist before stopping about two years ago: labourlist.org/author/ralph-baldwin/He'd also post comments on other articles. Surprised he's actually gone and done it mind.

This is from one of his pieces from 2010 - labourlist.org/2010/09/decision-time/I guess if the Tories are happy to have these views within the party the base of the party is far wider than any of us think.

And now he drones on about Cameron being "progressive" and similar empty BS. Sorry mate, but it is you who has changed - not us.

I thought he had already gone. His resignation message is pretty self-serving but that would be true of anybody. I agree with Mark S (don't faint) in that I believe that if somebody is elected in one party interest and decides to change it, then the electorate should be allowed to decide if they are happy with that. I think to describe Ian's reaction as 'drone'-like is unfair; he has consistently defended Cllr Baldwin only to have been let down by him.

dok, I don;t get him to be honest he basically lied to a large number of LL people over the years and to myself personally when I asked if rumours of his defection to tories a few weeks ago were true.
the party is well rid of him and I think he has caused bid trouble with B&D labour.

No one really believes in progress anymore. That's what I meant to say, anyway. Not as something that is anyway.

It's an interesting defection. The Lib Dems are still getting around 20% of the vote (double the Greens) down there.

The Lib Dems are still getting around 20% of the vote (double the Greens) down there. However in neighbouring Shirley West, Howard Allen, who defected from LD to Green held his seat this year as a Green. That was probably a big factor in the decision.

Interesting bit of alternate history in that article, suggesting that the Lib Dems evolved from the SDLP!

Now confirmed that Gareth Ratcliffe has left the Tory group. He has said his reason for this was that he wants to take part in decision-making in any new administration.

Now confirmed that Gareth Ratcliffe has left the Tory group. He has said his reason for this was that he wants to take part in decision-making in any new administration. Is he the first defector to be so open about his motives, as opposed to all those who only discover they're passionately committed to a cause when writing their defection statement?
