I note he was promoted straight on to the Exec, despite not having been a candidate before and not being in a safe seat. The first suggests he's not a party die-hard and the second suggests it wasn't talent-spotting, so what's the background that saw such a swift rise? Apologies all, only got back from holiday in the early hours yesterday! This came as rather a shock to me when I returned home. The general feeling here is of betrayal and anger. This was discussed with no-one on our group before it happened and I think just demonstates a naivety on behalf of Aiden. He didn't like collective responsibility and he didn't like making unpleasant decicions so he's off somewhere where he can have more influence in his group but will find he can actually achieve little. It's very sad as he had a great future ahead of him, I don't think he'll be able to realise that as a Labour member. He had been a member of the party for about three years before he was selected for the seat and he got a lot of support to win it (with that support his popularity was created, it didn't exist before the campaign). There certainly wasn't anything pre-arranged before the election re. the Cabinet post, that's just the way things fell as he was capable and had the time to do the job. The glee he took in defeating both Labour and the Tories six months ago does seem a bit odd now. As he puts his ward above all else (that I think in the end was the underlying issue, that we couldn't deliver all he wanted for his ward and he couldn't compromise) it would not surprise me if he goes Indy before his term is up as sooner or later something will come up that the other four members agree on (all Labour members to their core) that he won't, plus of course Labour's far more rigid party structure. It remains to be seen, but we'll just concentrate on winning back a seat in his ward in 2014.

In a sense getting elected, & even being in opposition is 'easy' politics, being able to process information, & deal with any ease/popularity involved & then take decisions is where ability shows itself. Btw, you comment that he won't have as great a future with Labour... I'm not sure he has a great future anywhere, switching never engenders trust ....

I think you are probably being a bit hard on the principle of defection Robin. While I obviously have a partisan view on defections from the Lib Dems I would accept that a defector can build trust in their new party. It does take a fair amount of effort though. If he is indeed a ward nationalist that becomes harder because a defector of such type has trouble being a team member. IMPO one often gets more done for a ward by compromising in the short term so that others will support you in the long.

I broadly agree with you, but then again one of Merton's Labour councillors seems to get along okay with his Lab colleagues by showing the zeal of the convert . . .

Or just enjoying the shock of the new ..... either way I'm not sure that trust is involved, but then again I'm not the greatest enthusiast when it comes to defecting, so I may be prejudiced ....

Or just enjoying the shock of the new ..... Perhaps, although he joined you lot in 1997/8 when he was a sitting Kingston councillor.

I can't remember whether we count moves to independent, but we seemed to have missed Cllr Stephen Bett (Norfolk CC) Con to Ind, in order to contest the Norfolk PCC election against of course a Conservative candidate.
