Bradford MBC suspended Labour councillor Imdad Hussein ( Heaton Ward ) has joined the Peace Party and is apparently intending to fight the Middlesbrough byelection .
He accused Labour of conducting a prolonged witch-hunt against him and showing no consideration for his 20 years plus loyalty and service to the Labour party .

I note he was promoted straight on to the Exec, despite not having been a candidate before and not being in a safe seat. The first suggests he's not a party die-hard and the second suggests it wasn't talent-spotting, so what's the background that saw such a swift rise? I would suggest the startling swing from Conservative to Lib Dem that gave him the unexpected victory and denied a Labour gain in Cosham ward may provide part of the answer. He was obviously popular in his ward.

Would Respect not take him? They can be slightly picky, they only took the late Cllr Hussain on for about 2 days.

"Politics is not about north and south, it’s about right and wrong. I feel the Labour message is the right message." And yet he apparently didn't think that when he was running against them in May. Probably scurrilous rumour, but one of the comments suggests he tried to defect to the Tories too.

I thought it was established previously that expulsions/suspensions don't really count on this thread??

I think you may find that UKIP are wrong sooner than utterly bonkers.
Therefore they probably wouldn't take on Dorries.

My view is that if someone were to defect to the party it would be best that they did that from a position of principle rather than finding they've lost the whip over some unrelated issue and therefore join as a matter of expediency. I would add that while I far from partake in the mob-hatred of Dorries amongst the Metroplitan chattering classes who are so well represented here, I don't think she would necessarily be the politicain most likely to raise UKIPs profile in an exclusively positive way

but raise your profile she would ....
I have to totally back George Young here, she had to be suspended like any of us would if we took paid leave to do another job.

Well, UKIP took Bob Spink. Though depending on who you believe, it's not really known whether he quit the whip or had it withdrawn.

And it is not really known whether he ever actually joined UKIP or not.

Hansard had him down as a UKIP MP for the duration, IIRC. That's official enough for me.

It wasn't that unlikely beforehand...
