The videos of ballot box stuffing, even by “independent” monitors are blatant. There’s even evidence that wrestlers created a commotion to give time for officials to stuff the ballots and even that nuns helped rig the vote! The mother superior checked all the ballots of the nuns to make sure they’d been cast for Putin. FWIW, I think John Sweeney is a fantastic investigate reporter. He’s not popular because he pulls no punches, whereas I and many others like that. He is a complete bloody idiot. How would you have reported on the election then carlton43 would you have done any better, eh?

So far the turnout is believed to be between 59% and 63.7%, thereby showing that the Kremlin’s 70/70 strategy may have failed and and giving some vindication to Navalny who called for a boycott of the elections. Given just how much money the Kremlin spent on posters with slogans such as “Your Country, Your President”, in other words go out and vote Putin, that’s a failure and suggests dissatisfaction amongst a large proportion of the Russian population. Of course in the coming hours with the ballot stuffing etc. it may go to or above 70 but as it stands this late in the count there will be disappointment in the Kremlin.

Does anyone here speak Russian? There's a photo on the election page on Wikipedia, purporting to be a ballot paper, and if I have understood correctly, it has a brief summary of the candidate's current job. Therefore, Putin has "president of the Russian Federation" right next to his name!

It’s interesting how low the turnout seems to be in more Western leaning areas like Moscow, St Petersburg, Karelia, Kaliningrad etc.

Oh gawd....Sweeney is deranged. Does this in some way detract from clear evidence of election rigging? Because he is not only barking but fanatically hostile to Russia. So I don't believe him, basically

Clearly the most credible opponent was prevented from standing. But if you're saying do I think Putin legitimately received a majority of votes cast - undoubtedly. He is popular in Russia.

Why would Putin bother rigging an election he knew he was going to win by miles? Vanity, but also insurance. Most of the votes cast will be genuine and the real funny business is the state control of the media, vetting of opposition candidates, etc. But authoritarians who operate with a constitutional facade have learned from Mugabe's error of assuming that that is all that is necessary.

For the Left, they've got South Africa to look forward to. That would be a proper election in which the outcome is certain (at least for now - India used to be the same), rather than an electoral type event. Not comparable...

Given the current hysteria I wouldn't believe much I'm hearing on either side. And as for employers telling employees how to vote....this was absolutely commonplace in rural areas here until relatively recently. So yes I think Putin got the most votes and would have done even if the banned candidate had stood.

I have been following Russia and Russian politics for about 7 years now and I believe that if Navalny had stood and if it was a fair election it would have went to a second round and Navalny would have run him close. That’s my personal opinion. My final thought, I think it’s telling about the state of our society that your answer was what it was. Even blatant vote rigging, with videos and you’re still equivocal 😕
