I might do one later, however, in the best spirit of the Russian elections, I'll not bother with the voting and just put the results up. OK? A prediction competition wouldn't go amiss for both Putin's total and turnout. It was a difficult choice for me. I voted for Yabloko with some hesitation. And who's the idiot who voted for Zhirinovsky!? He's a cross between Hitler and Boris Johnson! You mean a much more focused and effective Boris crossed with a humorous and likeable Hitler? That would be a frightening mixture and probably amazingly popular. |

I think the only question is the extent to which a pseudo-politician's pseudo-party, a Frankenstein's monster, may subsequently have taken on a life of its own. |

But while it's easy to joke - Putin is popular in Russia. They like a strongman and the dalliance with vodka-driven liberal democracy with Yeltsin put them off that rather odd idea. The irony of course is that without Yeltsin there is no Putin, and until the bombings in 1999, Putin was regarded as another Yeltsin placeman who would sit in the Bely dom for about six months before the next joker appeared. True enough. What is clear is that ideology was in recent years at least, not a dominant factor in what bound the Russian ruling elite |

The videos of ballot box stuffing, even by “independent” monitors are blatant. There’s even evidence that wrestlers created a commotion to give time for officials to stuff the ballots and even that nuns helped rig the vote! The mother superior checked all the ballots of the nuns to make sure they’d been cast for Putin. FWIW, I think John Sweeney is a fantastic investigate reporter. He’s not popular because he pulls no punches, whereas I and many others like that.
