The general rule is that we don't read much (anything...) into December by-elections with comedy turnouts. And especially if you lose them. Well, if we read into the last weeks by-elections, there is a Liberal Democrat landslide incoming. Do you believe that?

Tory strength in Staffs continues We really ought to have won this last time around. It’s still coming though. Don't forget the university. It's not that big but you don't hold many such seats now. On which note, Andrew Teale's previews note the recent poor performance of the Conservatives in Welwyn Hatfield. The University of Hertfordshire according to Wikipedia has more students than Bristol or Newcastle nowadays.

We really ought to have won this last time around. It’s still coming though. I rate Ashfield as a more likely gain. More votes to squeeze. Here are two words which should warn you to be careful of projecting Ashfield results into the future - Jason Zadrozny. Underestimate his machine at your peril.

The University of Hertfordshire according to Wikipedia has more students than Bristol or Newcastle nowadays. A lot of them do not live on campus. Many of them commute from the outermost London boroughs, St Albans, or Hertsmere. I know this from my days as an undergraduate there who contested elections there twice for the Green Party (Herts CC election, 2013, and Welwyn Hatfield BC election, 2014).

Barnsley’s Rockingham is a Labour hold according to John Healey's twitter He also said 66% of vote, but no other figures seem to have emerged.

Well there were about 10,000 full time students living in Hatfield in 2011 and I doubt the figure has gone down since then. The figures aren't significant in the other boroughs you mention with the partial exception of in Potters Bar (Hertsmere) due to the Veterinary college there. Doesn't have any bearing on the Handside result though if that was being implied

We have what appears to be a result from Westward Ho! Looks like a box tally to me, but Westward Ho! ward only has one polling district so I think we can conclude that Laws has won.
