Would someone with admin privileges please give this thread a name that will be intelligible to future readers? The old format -- "Local By-elections, December 14th, 2017" -- covered everything.

Actually there has been no consistent pattern for the labelling of these threads- there have been different ways of expressing the date, the year has quite often been missed off and the word "local" has not always been there, and could be presumed as its on the local elections board. The format which stananson calls the"old format" is the one I generally adopted as being fairly complete, but it scarcely matters. I for one am grateful for anyone who puts up the details of forthcoming elections and its good to have these up for Dec 14th before we have November 23rd or 30th or Dec 7th! I have only created threads if nobody else has done so - in the case of this last week, less than 48 hours before.

Following a stormy meeting of Newcastle-under-Lyme Council tonight, where the CEO and Head of Governance are suspended over electoral issues at the General Election, the Labour Council Leader has resigned and the Conservatives are reportedly forming a Minority Administration.
The current composition of the 60 member Council is 24 Labour, 22 Conservative, 3 Liberal Democrat, 1 UKIP, 5 Independent Group, 2 Kidsgrove Independent, 1 Newcastle Independent, 2 Vacant.
This should add a little spice to the 2 by-elections next week where Labour are defending both seats.

Bradwell should be safe, but at least one other councillor in Newchapel is a Tory, and we won the seat by six votes last time. We're in trouble.

He is the City Director at Stoke-on-Trent council (or, as Newcastle's Twitter coyly puts it, "our neighbouring authority") and has brought with him some Stoke staff to make these by-elections work.

The rise of the Independents, and Independents, and Independents has rather muddied the water. I wonder how co-operative they are? On Crewe & Nantwich at one point we had six LDs, 3 Leighton Independents and 3 (ex-others) Independents. For administrative purposes we acted as a single bloc which helped the officers no end. They called us the 633 Squadron. Worth noting that NULBC is having all-out elections next year on new boundaries. I get the distinct impression that some councillors have lost interest/ are demob happy, and just drawing their rations till May. Deplorable, but ...

I am grateful to tucson for starting this thread and the two Newcastle elections, and to markf and europeanlefty for adding a couple more of these last elections before Christmas. However that leaves four more with nothing yet, so I am going to start with them, and then if I have time I may bring the four already noted together in one post and under the same format, just to make it easier for everyone to scan through come next Thursday. I'll start with north Devon which has been a very interesting area lately... edit: I have now brought 5 of these by elections together under a common post with 2 others( Wigan and Barnsley) nearby, and have left europeanleftie's post(Salford) in its original format as it contained all the important information and its also near at hand.
