I'm not sure I agree with the process for deciding on the Spitzenkandidaten whereby the group with the largest plurality should automatically get the Commission Presidency though. Let's say the EPP emerges as the largest group again, but can only muster the support of itself and maybe the ECR for its programme and leadership, while everyone from ALDE leftwards were to back the S&D candidate, why should the presidency go to the EPP? I also don't like the imposition of a secondary mandate for commission president onto the European Parliamentary elections - it is a clear breach of separation of powers and provides a distorting effect to how people vote (maybe not in the UK, where no-one cares about these things, but in Germany in 2014, there was lots of press talk about the spitzenkandidaten in the lead up to the election). If you're going to have a directly elected commission president (and I'm not saying you should), make it a stand-alone election across the whole EU! I needn't have worried...

Ad Austria's Hahn: Obviously You have to study philosophy and be minister for science in order to be responsible for the budget of 500 million people ...

It is quite astounding that Reynders has pulled it off. When I lived in Liege, he was regarded as surprisingly successful. Fifteen years later, and he proves the maxim that "shit floats".

As for Borrell. Well, at least it isn't a finance and economy position.

Sylvie Goulard, the Commissioner proposed by France, is rejected by IMCO (internal market) and ITRE (research and energy) parliamentary committee: 82 votes against, 29 in favour
Commissioners nominated by Hungary and Romania also failed because of conflict of intersts emerged.
Swedish and Polish choices weren't approved after first hearing and were asked to come back this week for more questions. They got approved in the end.

Goulard rejected because of scrutiny over some of her dealings. Whereas being an actual criminal gets you the foreign affairs post.

Hungary new proposal for Commissioner is Oliver Varhelyi. He is Hungary's ambassador to the EU French new proposal is Thierry Breton. Former Finance minister 2005-07 in the De Villipen government. Romania is now proposing Victor Negrescu. Former MEP and minister for European affairs.
UVDL accepted the French and Hungarian choices. Not yet, the Romanian choice. And it is their third proposals.
And all 3 should then face the Parliament select committee.

Breton is quite a big beast. And a skilled administrator. In 2007, he took unemployment to its lowest level since June 1983.
But it is a strange choice by Manu, as he is very much a creature of the centre - Right.

But isn't this Macron's strategy?: Being progressive in issues concerning religion/culture and quite right in economy (summa summarum: a liberal and centrist), in order to make a rebirth of the soft right impossible. The lunatic fringes of FI and RN will not be a problem for him.

Romania changed candidate again. Now they propose Adina Valean or Siegfried Muresan. Ursula Van Whatever picked Valean because she is a woman. . There were rumours of portfolio swappings between Hungary and Romania too. Now it seems they are back to the previous assignments: Hungary with Enlargement and Romania with Transports.
