If this election does turn out less well "than expected" for the BJP (of course, it would require one of the miracles of our age for them not to clearly win it) then I do wonder if Modi publicly saying he wanted the biggest blowout ever might be a factor. I did say it appeared just a tad hubristic at the time....

Well it maybe works both ways.
In government you are much more at the mercy of "events", but having far greater power to set the wider political agenda somewhat counteracts that.

Its easily forgotten now that back in the 1980s Southend was a major Tory versus SDP/Lib battleground, with Labour confined to a handful of wards even in better years.

Especially if we do see Sunak drag things out until late this year, an incoming Labour government could still have enough of a honeymoon to do pretty well in the May 2025 elections generally. Tories elected in this cycle have led a charmed life for a while (2013 the only partial exception) and it would be nice to see that finally end.

Are the three elected in Tynemouth all incumbent councillors? That would certainly help explain the vote disparities if so.

We had a rather more recent example in September 2010, with Exeter and Norwich going to the polls after previous plans to move to unitary status were shelved.

Regarding by-elections, I found out the other day that had Dudley West’s swing been repeated throughout the country in 1997, the Tories would have zero seats on the new boundaries, rather than three or four Labour's numerical vote was down on the previous GE, though - this shows it was a bad result for them!

I fear that rcronald used the US form of "down by" there (ie "trailing by") File along with the Yanks erroneous use of "swing".

Indeed - Labour have a way back here, but it isn't through misguided appeals to nostalgia.

A lot of Sham 69's stuff hasn't aged terribly well, but they still had their moments. Now, the Cockney Rejects - they really *were* crap

Its one result, in what was a notably stronger than average Labour area in 2022. And their win this time was at the upper end of expectations on here.

I was going on the figures posted on the Humberside PCC thread on here, which were obviously way out (had Labour winning by over 5k!) EDIT: that's because they were actually the 2021 votes, duh

But the PCC elections at least had next to no tactical voting, whereas there was plenty in 1997 and surely will be at the coming GE as well.
At least one mistake spotted on the map too - Labour "won" Hull in these elections, not the LibDems.

And local byelections in Scotland are de facto conducted by AV.
