Just noting the North Somerset Weston South name. Three of the four points of the Compass. Has anywhere got all 4? If Weston had a SE ward it would just to show how it would work.

What's the latest time that a councillor could announce their retirement, whilst still leaving time for there to be a by-election on May 2nd? Tuesday is the last possible date for resigning and having a by-election on May 2nd. 25 working days + 2 days for Good Friday and Easter Monday. Expect a few last minute announcements, especially in fairly evenly balanced councils.

It's a lazy Sunday, so here's me doing a mix of Andrew Teale and David Ashcroft. I trust neither mind, under the circumstances. Leyland St Mary's - MapCensus 2011 - DetailsCensus 2011 - All usual residents | 3,479 | Europe | 3,425 (98.4%) | Christian | 2,771 (79.6%) | Muslim | 2 (0.1%) | Qualifications (over 16) | 2,436 |
Leyland St Ambrose - MapCensus 2011 - detailsAll usual residents | 4,833 | Europe | 4,727 (97.8%) | Christian | 3,384 (70.0%) | Muslim | 34 (0.7%) | Qualifications (over 16) | 3,212 |
I say "Leyland", you say "Trucks", right? Well they still manufacture vehicles here, only not as many, and without the dubious quality. Today the town is best known for being a place from where you commute, although service providers Enterprise (my former employer) are perhaps the best known company locally. They liked to involve themselves in whatever local authorities couldn't or wouldn't do, and on the same token, South Ribble Borough Council's weekly bin collection is contracted to Enterprise via a contract with SITA. St Mary's ward could be said to be based around two of the landmarks of Leyland, the Runshaw College and mammoth Tesco megasupercomplexstore. The entire southwest corner is taken up by Worden Park, the kind of sprawling public space which our great-great-greats left for future generations to enjoy. An arts centre in the middle of the park is used for local events and music gigs. Much of the housing which faces Runshaw College is of the identikit suburban type, all bungalows or semi-detached with the same layout of rooms, windows and gardens as each other. The feel is perhaps underscored by the streetnames - Glendale, Ferndale, Wyresdale, Kingsdale, Mardale, Borrowdale. Somewhat 'detached' from this chunk of housing is the terraced housing running in lines away from the supersized Tesco. Even I can remember what this was like before Tesco came in, taking with it a very rundown 60s/70s shopping estate. Towngate runs through the ward, just around the corner from the Hough Lane high-street. Here you'll find a fair amount of decent pubs, and "Th'owd Chippy." St Mary's election results: 2007: Con 882, 804; Lab 243, 228; LD 160, 152 2011: Con 907, 888; Lab 450, 427 St Ambrose is a very peculiar shape indeed, with poky out bits north and south. The biggest chunk comes from the housing behind the railway station, plonked on the WCML allowing for direct trains to Preston, Blackpool, Bolton, Manchester and Liverpool. Traffic levels here are chronic, as junction 28 of the M6 is the off-route of choice for commuters and this can add many minutes onto the most basic of journeys. Google Maps doesn't show, at least in satellite view, the biggest change to happen in the local area in terms of population growth and home building. Buckshaw Village is the North's largest such construction project, which has seen thousands of homes, a Tesco (of course), and an entire "retirement village" built on what was MoD land in the guise of the Royal Ordnance Factory. Looking straight out of the Truman Show, and smelling like a carpet showroom when it was first opened to the public, Buckshaw is not just a homebuilder's dream, it's also an administrative anomaly. The border with Chorley Borough Council runs right through the middle, slicing the pharmacy and newsagent in half, resulting in two different bin collections on different days, with each Council stopping half-way down streets on strict instruction. With the mix of new-build housing and very well settled urban sprawl coming together as one, this ward is unpredictable. Usual predictions about the voting habits of new build housing estates can only stretch so far, as Buckshaw is an entirely new community, not just a couple of rabbit warren streets. As the election results show, there was something of a total reverse of results in just one "leap", so when the residents vote again in 2015 - under new boundaries for a reduced-size council - it might not be particularly easy to second guess the winners. St Ambrose election results: 2007: Con 420, 369; LD 285, 280; Lab 267, 261 2011: Lab 580, 571; Con 518, 493; LD 105, 100 Howick and Priory - mapCensus 2011 - DetailsAll usual residents | 3,863 | Europe | 3,780 (97.8%) | Christian | 3,000 (77.6%) | Muslim | 24 (0.6%) | Qualifications (over 16) | 2,777 |
Penwortham, I am told, is one of the largest Town Councils in England (and therefore I assume the UK). It's a good place to go for social students and geopolitical explorers, as Higher Penwortham has been separated from Lower Penwortham for decades, allowing for an obvious and stark difference between the two parts. (And this being Penwortham, there's no common "north" and "south" here.) Whether you live in Penwortham or not is the difference between an estate agent calling your house "a comfortable investment" or "a nice price." The good folk of the place aren't very pleased with sharing the PR1 postcode with Avenham (where I live), notorious for all the problems which come from being within innercity Preston. When it was suggested that Preston Council might merge with South Ribble, the local paper reported great disquiet in Penwortham, showing a poster from an opponent which represented Preston as a shark eating up all its near-neighbours. This ward has much greenery and fields, out from the banks of the Ribble along to the exceptionally busy A59 Liverpool Road. "Howick" is a name of Scottish origin, and is shown here in the name of a local wood and "Howick Cross", although unlike the "Leyland Cross" there is no stone structure of that type remaining. There's not much housing here, that's all at the lower part off the exceptionally steep Kingsway. In between this housing, surrounded as it is by huge, thick woodland, there's one half of Penwortham's quaint shopping estate, where boutiques and bakers sit alongside a Subway. (Tip - the only pub on this street, outside the ward, is not so good, but the Greek-owned chippy, again outside the ward, is very good indeed. On the Howick & Priory side of the ward, I recommend a butty shop whose name escapes me, but the fella often gives you free flapjacks if he's feeling in the mood.) There's signs of the distant past and the very contemporary all in one place here. Adjoining "Hangman's Place Wood" is Penwortham Golf Course, underneath which is being laid a new sewerage system taking out Preston's waste to a new facility further down the Ribble. Howick and Priory election results 2007: Con 818, 799; LD 529, 505 2011: Con 727, 675; LD 512, 408; Lab 371

Fleetwood, two ways. Park ward is right in the middle of what was once amongst the busiest fishing port in the area. There is, at least, a park in Park, as there must be across the whole of Wyre Borough, although this particular "Park" shares its name with/gave its name to the Town Council ward of the same name. This area is not quite the large, and at times semi-rural, expanse of Lytham/St Annes further down the Fylde peninsula, nor is it the squat terraces off the coast of neighbouring Blackpool. Bounded in by the A587 Broadway on one side, Copse Road on the other, the homes here are the sturdy, semi-detached type which scream "post-war overspill". A Catholic Church and connected school are here too, neighboured by an outpost of the Blackpool & Fylde College. By way of indication, Heathfield Road, one of the many unspectacular roads running north-south along the ward, has a house for sale at £95,000The Blackpool Trams which run through this ward - there are four stops - are no longer double-decker and bedecked with lightbulbs. A German company won the franchise to provide Blackpool Transport with Manchester Metrolink style trams, purple in colour and no longer timetabled to stop at every halt on the route. The main bus route from Blackpool to Fleetwood still packs out, though, perhaps as the coastal route still affords views of the beach and sea which the trams no longer can provide, even if the buses suffer the stop-start shunting common when Blackpool is "in season". With a capital "P", "Phraos" was the lighthouse built for Ptolemy II of Egypt, which is a world away from the exposed head of Fleetwood. As local people will tell you without hesitation, they don't live in Blackpool and are not Blackpool people. Their town is not as quaint as Lytham/St Annes, nor as brash as Blackpool, which might suggest why tourists tend not to flock here in many numbers. Industry may have faded, as the fisherman no longer go out in such great numbers as they once did, but there's still grey, functional look to the place. Visitors have perhaps three main reasons to visit this tip of the town; the market, the chippies, or Fleetwood Freeport, a very American-style outlet centre which just falls out of the southern part of this ward. You might want to visit the waterfront via the Mount complex, an exposed mix of visitor centre and sedate gardens, though like most of the place, there's not much to keep you here once you've done it. Maybe that's harsh, but I've done Fleetwood once, and that seemed quite enough for me... Park election results 2007 - Con 569, 495 [one elected]; Lab 514, 460 [one elected] 2011 - Lab 694, 674; Con 503, 420 Pharos election results 2007 - Lab 771, 722, 708; Con 496, 481, 370; LD 220 2011 - Lab 919, 893, 825; Con 366, 343, 269 Staina - mapDetailsUsual residents | 6,112 | Europe born | 6,046 (98.9%) | Christian | 4,554 (74.5%) | Muslim | 11 (0.2%) | Qualifications over 16 | 4,003 |
There's a Stanah in Staina, and "staina" means stone, but there's no Staina Road. This ward covers the eastern half of Thornton, which itself is the eastern half of Thornton-Cleveleys. This is very comfortable Lancashire indeed, wide roads and large houses. Even the bungalows are large, and there are very few home types around here other than the bungalow. Skippool is a small hamlet of farms and remote properties at the end of gravel pathways, neighbouring a yacht club with many a smart boat if Google maps is any guide. For the visitor who fancies doing nothing with their week, or even month, there's enough caravan sites in the ward to meet your needs. Ranking amongst the least deprived parts of the region, this is the very opposite of nearby Blackpool. Thornton is where people move to retire, frankly, and it's a place with more in common with similarly town-like Poulton-le-Fylde to its south. What Thornton doesn't have - unlike both Blackpool and Fleetwood - is particularly easy access to the rail network. Direct trains to Poulton and Kirkham were lost a generation or so ago, and Lancs County Council haven't been rushing to help Network Rail reintroduce services. If you're very strict about the definition of "detached wards", this part of the sprawling "Wyre & Preston North" is cut off from the rest by the northern edge of Fylde. Staina election results 2007: Con 1,515, 1,433, 1,423; Lab 470, 443 2011: Con 1,445, 1,336, 1,311; Lab 679, 665
