Jimmy Cartwright, Lib Dem Councillor for Claygate ward on Elmbridge Borough Council has resigned. By-election to take place on 2 May. He resigned from the non party political Claygate Parish Council on 5 March, but a by-election there is unlikely and co-option is expected.

A notice of vacancy has been published by Newcastle City Council for Castle ward presumably a resignation by one of the Lib Dem councillors .

Adam Pogonowski, councillor for Abbey ward, is standing down from Cambridge BC. He was elected as a Green, but defected to Labour on local election day 2012. The proximate cause is that he's moving to London soon, but I think he'd also been finding being a councillor hard-going, largely because he moved outside the city just after his election and as a non-motorist he'd found it quite hard to get around.
Our candidate for the by-election will be Pete Roberts, last seen on the shortlist for the parliamentary seat. As yet, the other parties haven't announced their sacrificial lambs, but then they've been keeping very quiet about who any of their candidates will be this may. Either way, Abbey looks like it's back to being the safe Labour ward it used to be.

The second vacancy on Mendip Council is caused by the resignation of Sue Cook (Lib Dem) in Shepton West.
An indication of the background is contained in my report on the forthcoming Shepton West town council by-election this week (21 March).
