I did originally predict a LD gain but revised that when someone pointed out to me that Alison Graham was the former LD councillor for the ward .
North Tyneside Wallsend was a LD gain from Labour

Harrogate's a good win for LDs. Currently I make it Consevatives have gained 3 (2 from Labour, 1 from Ind) and lost 3 (2 to LD, 1 to Ind). LDs have gained 2 with no losses and Lab have gained 1 (from Ind) but lost 2 (to Con).It can be sort of argued that D&G shouldn't really count  |

Labour will almost defintely take a seat at the next council elections, but that could be at the expense of the SNP perhaps. |

It's notable that the LibDems had some good results last night. I wonder if this is because they were focusing exclusively on these by-elections whereas Labour and the Tories were at least having to go through the motions of fighting countywide campaigns for the PCC elections? It's certainly been a good night for them - having had only 1 gain since the may elections, they've picked up 4 (including one which came a bit out of the blue) and held 2 that were certainly far from safe. |

I'm not sure that's true everywhere, and I'd have to imagine most activists put a lot more effort into by-elections in their areas than into the PCC contests. |
