Joe Murphy, labour councillor for Claremont ward (Salford) has sadly died. He'd been on the scene for a while hadn't he? Since 1971. I actually thought Bernard Pennington, who died fairly recently and has also been on salford council pre-173, was the last councillor from the pre-1973 era. Obviously I was wrong. He was actually deselected in 2010 from Irwell Riverside ward but managed to get selected for Claremont ward after this so remained on the council. And his death means there will be two local by-elections in Claremont this year.

Powys UA, Yscir - no nominations for 4 May election - 6 candidates: Con, Plaid Cymru, Green, 3 Ind [ ...] North Dorset DC, Blandford Cedntral - Independent died 17 May Strange that there's suddenly so much interest in Yscir! An unlikely Green win would earn them group status on the council. I'm not familiar with the Cedntral neighbourhood of Blandford Forum.

It really can't be much of a commitment being a district councillor in Rutland. It's tiny and they contract out most of their services anyway. Perhaps she she means she didn't realise how boring it was, and would rather watch TV. Work commitments my arse.

Derek Mead, North Somerset First Independent councillor for Weston-super-Mare North Worle (North Somerset) has tragically been killed in an accident on his farm. Cllr. Mead was a prominent local businessman and advocate for dairy farmers. He started the North Somerset First Independents after being elected as an Independent in a July 2013 by-election.

Are any council controls at stake tomorrow? Who knows about Powys with 30 independents on the council, but otherwise none of tomorrow's contests could change control. Stockton-on-Tees is pretty finely balanced, but not enough for one seat to change things. South Glocs is not as close, and East Cambridgeshire is almost a Tory one party state.
