The succession to Sir Gerald Kaufman has been debated in Manchester Labour politics for 25 years.

Presumably to be held May 4th, with the mayoral election?

I can see Labour putting forward Rosa Battle (whom I've suspected would get a seat sooner rather than later). A nearby councillor and fairly well-regarded. At which point - enter the Gorgeous One.

I was a constituent for a while and he was my Dad's MP from 1974 until my Dad passed away 11 years ago. Dad was a regular correspondent in the later years concerning sheltered accommodation shortcomings; a talented cartoonist, my Dad used to send the odd illustration of his particular concerns in the hope of "brightening up otherwise boring correspondence". Not a great fan of politics, he had a lot of time for Gerald Kaufman as somebody who endeavoured to do his best for his constituents. May he rest in peace.

IIRC we went backwards in most places in Manchester last year, I assume due to the overwhelming focus on getting John Leech elected in Didsbury West. Indeed, though in Levenshulme there appears to have been a particular issue of an Independent taking the greater part of the vote - one Mark Breeze who funnily enough appears to be the same Mark Breeze who came fourth in Stoke Central in 2015 Wind of change?

I may be a Green politician and not a Labour politician, but I will miss his presence as well, especially with what he could come up with in the House of Commons.

Bristol West is the only other one that I can recall offhand, though there may be others.

IIRC the CLP is currently suspended, so the selection process could be "interesting". Could be a perfect opportunity finally to shoe-horn a Hard Left candidate into a by-election (every candidate selected so far has been a moderate). It's a seat where doing so probably wouldn't lose many votes (and might win some back from the Greens).

Suprising no 2nd places in London really.

Given the bar charts showing the progression of the Labour vote in Stoke Central and Copeland, it's worth noting that in Manchester Gorton Labour actually got a higher percentage of the vote in 2015 than it did in 1997. It was mostly down to the strong move from Liberal Democrat to Labour in the 2010-15 period.

Bit of a Dilemma for all the opposition parties on how hard to fight it really. The Lib Dems could probably return to second if they tried, but if the greens go for it as well they could both end up spending an awful lot of money in a battle for a very distant second with a relatively poor vote share.
I doubt UKIP want the hype and disappointment of ramping their chances in another Northern Labour seat again. That said, there are wards, particularly the two Gortons themselves that should be quite favourable for them. OTOH they will get killed in the Asian wards of Rusholme, Longsight and Whalley Range.
Tories presumably just want to hold their deposit.

This big Remain-voting seat will be way down UKIP's target list but with local and mayoral elections being held in May there is likely to be a very long by-election campaign to educate voters.

From a Green perspective, I think its vital that we throw the kitchen sink at this seat, if we don't I think it will end our chances of becaming a credible alternative in the Northern cities, a strong showing here is vital for Natalie Bennett's chances in Sheffield Central in 2020.

It could/should be held on the same day as Walton and Leigh if they're not fought on May 4th.

Surely there is no way the LDems can back off on this one - they have been official opposition on Manchester City council with 20+ seats within the last few years, so you have to think they will fight this one full on.
