I am friends with a Labour office holder in Manchester who responded with 'Haha no' when I mentioned Kate Chappell.

My in-depth investigation shows that Withington Community Hospital is most definitely still there and open. That postcode- M20 2LR- is in Manchester Withington not Manchester Gorton. Yes, it's still there long after John Leech said that Labour was going to close it. It's still there two years after John Leech got booted out.

Manchester Gorton!!! I think some on here are taking the thread off on a bird related tangent. I thought as the crow flies was a common phrase! It is, but we're suckers for a good pub. That's true. Also suckers for truly awful puns.

Remind me Mark, are you distressed by the rise of so-called "fake news"?

So according to that article, the CLP is not suspended now Have been lifted in November, subject to a number of conditions, according to their Facebook page, which includes selections being run by the regional office.

Withington Hospital, as was, was totally unfit for the modern era- it was an old workhouse! Labour quite sensibly rationalised South Manchester's hospitals.

Meanwhile Manchester Gorton Lib Dems will no doubt soon save the constituency from a candidacy by John Leech.

I have no local knowledge whatsoever but I wonder if Qassim Afzal will want to stand again for the Lib Dems . He came a good 2nd in 2005 and 2010 and is still active in the Lib Dems .

This will be of no interest to UKIP but I note Katie Fanning contested Gorton North last May and got a very creditable 22% from a standing start. She was recently elected to the NEC and would be a good tip to fly the flag for the party here but we would be looking to save our deposit and not much more. Katie Fanning has ruled herself out from seeking the Ukip nomination.

Friends in the local party tell me that the Lib Dems may have their candidate in place by the weekend. Qas Affazal was mentioned as a possibility, along with former Gorton North councillor Jackie Pearcey and current ppc Dave Page. Although this list is by no means exhaustive and they do seem to be casting about for expressions of interest from across Greater Manchester.

I was thinking more of 2001 Birmingham Sparkbrook and Small Heath.
