Gillian Troughton is selected as Labour candidate - so not the Momentum-backed Rachael Holliday.

Can you two leave off the factional spin, thanks None of the candidates were overtly anxious to present themselves in such terms, despite outside efforts.

Well, of course they weren't. But it's going to affect how everyone feels about the byelection so it's important.

I wonder what the good people of Copeland make of the gattopardo Donnafugata is based on Cleator Moor. Did you not know? Don Nafugata played standoff for Whitehaven in 1986/87.

I have just noticed the wonderful Lampedusa quote on your avatar. A profound perception from a great book. I love the word gattopardo. Lots of very cultured information. This is a wonderful, informative, and deeply cultured post, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Well, of course they weren't. But it's going to affect how everyone feels about the byelection so it's important. Whoever won would have been a unity candidate running a unity campaign - because that is what the circumstances demand. It will certainly be true of Gillian now. (though let's not forget that "Corbynista" Holliday used to work at Sellafield and strongly supports it, thus negating a chief Tory attack line here) And since I will inevitably be asked, I couldn't attend tonight and (maybe neglectfully) hadn't arranged a proxy; it was proving a hell of a choice mind, in a good way

Strong rumours tonight that both by elections are to be held on 23rd February. I don’t quite see how that works. Polling Day for a Parliamentary By election can be between 21 and 27 working days following the issue of the writ. Given the Reed was not going to resign until 31st January , that would appear to rule out any Thursday before 2nd March. Perhaps Reed and Hunt have agreed to resign earlier!

I must say as a complete outsider Rachel Holliday seemed to have rather more "wow factor". Gill Troughton seems like a solid candidate though, which is perhaps what you need when you are ahead..

Donnafugata is based on Cleator Moor. Did you not know? Funniest post of the year so far. Wasn't the original film horribly cut? I loved the book but haven't yet seen the film. Cleatia Siciliana Moria. Either undiscovered verismo or a communicable disease? And in Copeland! I could never believe that the film would live up to the book and so have never seen it apart from a chunk that fell into an art course as an interesting module. It was shown without any introduction and no soundtrack at all, for us to analyse the directorial and the visual effects as visual effects. It was quite striking and had an opulence and rich tonal context that held together very well.

There's a pretty obvious pattern now. Corbynites - however defined - are not getting selected. Momentum is faction-ridden at the top and not exactly overwhelming on the ground. There's talk once more of front-bench resignations, though maybe it's just talk. The polls are dire. La commedia e finita? Well not quite. But can it really drag on till 2020?

Nice to know we might not have to wait until May for these by-elections to take place. If Labour wins Copeland the number of female MPs would reach 196.

This is now confirmed, both Reed and Hunt have resigned today, and the by elections will be on the 23rd of February.

So much for "no election(s) until May", then. Are lobby journalists ever held to account for getting so much wrong?

This leaves scarcely a few days from now for everyone to get their nominations in (ten days at most for both by-elections).

Or until the Islington Pagliacco tops himself or stabs La Divina Diana.
