Suzanne Evans withdraws from seeking UKIP nomination for Sleaford & North Hykeham by-election as UKIP NEC determined she would received a biased amount of coverage whilst the UKIP leadership election is going on. (still/again)Now remind me. Which UKIP leadership election are we on at the moment?

The Conservatives are selecting tonight, but the names on the three-person shortlist haven't been revealed. Very odd.

Conservative candidate is Dr Caroline Johnson, a paediatrician who fought Scunthorpe in 2010. The unsuccessful shortlisted candidates were Lindsey Cawrey (ex Lincoln, now North Kesteven councillor, who defected from Labour in 2008 and is now on the cabinet, and Kelly Smith, former Lincolnshire county councillor who was cabinet member for finance.

Hmm a pretty decent effort on the 'I'm local' stakes....although if this was a Lib Dem target seat then Mr Clarke still would be tarred and feathered as a "dangerous outsider highly connected to the Westminster elite/bubble" all because he once left the constituency for a day trip to Skegness in 1997 during the course of which he shook John Prescott's hand....

I am surprised that was within the express powers of the NEC? If it is considered an advantage to be the party standard-bearer in a by-election, it is of course open to any or all candidates to do so. There is a bit of media focus on the contest but conversely one cannot also be concentrating on the leadership contest as well. That was a very poor decision and one wonders if it was actually fully legal? The NEC have final authority on the selection of candidates for parliamentary by elections. For the most part they simply ratify who ever the local branch choose but they don't have to do that if they don't want to.

My sage advice is that he should prepare for a chilli reception, but he might have some joy in thyme. But a win for him might be anise surprise for the Lib Dems.
Tarragon.

The Remembrance Day arms race referred to earlier has ratcheted up a notch. She appears to be sagging under the weight of her poppy.

Gwyn's 27th Rule of Politics. The size of someone's rosette is inversely proportional to the seriousness of their candidature. Not sure if it applies to poppies.
