This is comfortable Tory loyalist rural West Lincs rather than Boston so don't oversell UKIP here... Yeah, the non-Tory vote here are either rural non-conformist types, middle class Lincoln overspill suburbanites or (and this is the only area where UKIP might have some traction) Sleaford working class. Otherwise we're talking hyper-traditional middle class and rural Tory voters who aren't badly off who really struggle to even vote independent rather than Tory. West Lincs is somewhat different from East Lincs. It isn't as isolated, has more commuters in it and therefore isn't as inward looking and insular. It's also wealthier. From what UKIP's got on offer Suzanne Evans wouldn't be the worst choice then.

He appears to be a very flexible young man and to be fair doesn't discriminate against voters anywhere as he's more than happy to represent the entire UK electorate wherever they may be located even if it has to be all at the same time.

Writ was moved today so polling will be 8 December. First time there will have been parliamentary by-elections in consecutive weeks since 1990, if my quick scan of dates is right.

Writ was moved today so polling will be 8 December. That does not leave long for candidates to get ready and file, mind you....

Jim Clarke was tonight chosen by Sleaford and North Hykeham CLP to be the Labour candidate in the by-election. Local candidate, from Leasingham Moor in Sleaford. He stood for Lincolnshire county council in Sleaford West and Leasingham division in an October 2011 byelection; he got 22.1% of the vote and third place. His profile in the local paper went like this: Stood again in 2013; got 18.2% and fourth place. There was a Jim Clarke who used to stand for the Lib Dems in the area but I don't think this is the same person.

Suzanne Evans withdraws from seeking UKIP nomination for Sleaford & North Hykeham by-election as UKIP NEC determined she would received a biased amount of coverage whilst the UKIP leadership election is going on. (still/again)

The fact that Suzanne Evans was offered a choice between standing for UKIP in Sleaford and North Hykeham or standing for the UKIP leadership, and chose the leadership, may say something about UKIP's chances in the byelection.

I am surprised that was within the express powers of the NEC? If it is considered an advantage to be the party standard-bearer in a by-election, it is of course open to any or all candidates to do so. There is a bit of media focus on the contest but conversely one cannot also be concentrating on the leadership contest as well. That was a very poor decision and one wonders if it was actually fully legal?
