Two people known to be running for the Labour candidacy: Barnaby Marder, former Richmond record store proprietor Sam Stopp, Brent borough councillor and chair of Labour Campaign to End Homelessness Which one is the most Corbynista?

Marder is on the left, a signatory of ' Stop the Purge'. Stopp backed Yvette Cooper last year, and was on the list of Labour councillors who endorsed Owen Smith this year.

UKIP have endorsed Zac Goldsmith and won't be contesting the byelection themselves. Could be counter-productive if their aim is to maximise the number of votes for Zac.

Yes, I think I'd have "UKIP endorses Goldsmith" prominently displayed on any LD literature; along with "Tories stand aside to help Goldsmith".

So this by-election will likely be dominated by the issue of the runway, an issue on which all the likely candidates (Zac, LD, Lab, Grn) will be saying pretty much exactly the same thing... The hustings might not be that interesting

UKIP statement
To be frank, I think this is a poor show.

Surely, we can think of a concise, catchy term to encompass all three of the above opponents. The Regressive Alliance, perhaps?

yeah well 😳 I'll still claim that isn't 'going on about it' and I hope someone has had a quiet word since 😉 tbf there are a few in the party who are keen on it (I have been fb friended by Gwynoro Jones who I would say 'goes on about it' but it certainly isn't a major strand of philosphy FWIW, I think it would be a good place to start for the Greens to stand down and support an anti-runway, pro-Europe LibDem. But I'm not in London Green Party, let alone Richmond. This "progressive alliance" stuff tends to miss a major point, which is that all the parties mentioned offer totally different things. Picking one candidate is highly unlikely to deliver a vote vastly greater than the sum of its parts in many seats and will likely provoke some people to vote Tory or not at all. Additionally, an obviously Labour-backed alliance is not likely to win the likes of Hazel Grove, Cheadle, Winchester, or Eastbourne back to the Lib Dems. It's easily forgotten that the Lib Dems are as much an anti-Labour choice as an anti-Tory choice in many places- Sheffield Hallam springs to mind.

The hustings might not be that interesting Which means that the by-election could actually turn out to be about other issues. Zac will certainly be hoping Brexit isn't one of them, I suspect.

Could be very interesting to see the results to this, I'd be curious to know how people in the constituency view Goldsmith at this point.

So we are to have another Batley and Spen are we with no Conservative and no UKIP candidate? This is not a good trend. I can see that it makes sense for each party and it does help the defence against the LDs but I still don't like this tendency. I wonder if we shall see more of it as part of a more direct form of tactical voting/standing?

Goldsmith (Con) - 56% Olney (LD) - 29
Not sure if other party candidates were included or not.

Would not be a surprise, she seems a tad lightweight tbh (and her faux pas regarding deleted stuff on her website does not help)
