This is why, while I agree with Richard Allen's first paragraph at least, I have to hope that Goldsmith wins That is certainly a point of view that I can appreciate as I came pretty close to sharing it.

When was the last time a by-election had a >50% turnout?

The turnout figure in votes is 41,367 - so 2,069 to be sure of saving the deposit.

I've temporarily moved the by-elections category to the top of the home page. And there are over 100 viewing at 12.45 a.m.

When was the last time a by-election had a >50% turnout? Rochester and Clacton were both a shade over 50.

Any estimate of declaration time? The initial suggestion was 2:30.

Apparently Labour sources at the count believe that the Lib Dems will win with a majority of 2,000+ Just seen that and it seems quite extraordinary. Apparently Labour think, excluding postal ballots, it's 55% to 39%. Would certainly be a turn up, but I doubt that's entirely accurate.

Labour on the ground estimating that a Lib Dem gain with a majority of over 2 thousand. Gains of salt with that though.

Apparently Labour sources at the count believe that the Lib Dems will win with a majority of 2,000+ I honestly think the Liberal Democrat majority (if they indeed win this by-election) will barely be in treble figures at best. In fact, it could be closer than the Berwick-upon-Tweed by-election of 1973 or the West Derbyshire by-election of 1986.

I wonder how many times tonight Alistair Carmichael is going to describe the Richmond Park electorate as "sophisticated".

On the other hand, they're there, we're not, and the don't have much incentive to be suggesting they may have lost their deposit.
