Trying to work out whether the PvdA or SP is currently the most pathetic and can't decide. The Dutch Left is the biggest joke. Seems that it is pretty much the case in most of western Europe.

Tonight Rutte lost yet another member of his government: the secretary of state for Safety and Justice Van der Steur (whose job title is Minister) had lost the confidence of the second chamber because of his role in the affair that led to the departure of his predecessor. He resigned. In essence this has to do with a deal the former minster at that department (with the job title secretary of state) made with a criminal in his previous role as public prosecutor. Somehow the government never was able to fully inform parliament of the details of that deal, and especially about the amount paid. This week a book was published that claimed that Van der Steur, while he was a member of parliament, had edited the intended response by the ministery, to leave out information that could be painful for the government.
More importantly, during the debate the truthfullness of prime minister Rutte was once again under attack. It's likely that during the campaign that will start in a few weeks this will be a major issue. That may help Wilders to become the biggest party.
Van der Steur is the sixth member of this government to resign after losing the confidence of parliament. Earlier the affair I mentioned also lead to the resignation of the speaker of the chamber.

No more than usual, I'm afraid. Fortunately we are spared the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg, Diane Abbott and Nigel Farage.

And this from a supporter of the British Labour party. Irony is alive and well. At least we're not polling at 7% of the vote (well not yet, anyway!) And have less influence on the governing of the UK in the next 10 years than PvdA will have on the governing of the Netherlands in the next 4.

Since the electoral systems are so different, such a claim is entirely meaningless. And how much "influence" will PvdA have if they really are PASOKified??

In fairness they will almost certainly be leading in the polls within mere months of losing 2/3rds of their vote from last time, because that's how Dutch politics works in these depillared times.

The Dutch Greens are also set to get their best seat total ever (15-16), speaking on that matter

And will doubtless be polling at three seats within months of the election if they enter government, lol.

I'm always rather amused that the Dutch Greens were formed as a merger between the Communist Party, the Pacifist Socialist Party, the Evangelical People's Party and a splinter of the Catholic People's Party.

Yesterday someone who is a natural VVD voter and used to be a huge Rutte supporter, told me she hadn't yet decided whom she was going to vote for. Apparantly the campaign starts today. Campaigns are almost exclusively fought in the media, so can be easily ignored.
