Presumably there'll now be some pressure to take up the idea of the Babergh/Mid Suffolk merger, particularly since I seem to recall the referendum was only lost narrowly in whichever ever one of the two voted against. There is. It has led to the fall of the Tory leader of Babergh since there was a revolt amongst Tory councillors over the idea of it going ahead without a new referendum. A couple of the rebels have since become independents. Another referendum seems sure to take place in Babergh, though as far as I know no timeframe has yet been set. Of course, they are already nearly merged, sharing a chief executive and many services. A merger seems off the table prior to the 2019 elections though. I wonder if the merged council would be called South Suffolk.

It strikes me you could create a fairly sensible metropolitan entity out of Wigan, Warrington and St. Helens (possibly adding Skelmersdale and perhaps Runcorn) based upon them being areas clearly affected by Manchester and Liverpool, but not inexorably in the orbit of either.

A decent effort, but quite apart from the points others have already raised, I simply will not accept the continued division of Sussex until such time as that county competes as two separate teams in the County Championship. By that argument Yorkshire should be a single county. (Shouldn't we be doing this over in the Redrawn Local Government Boundaries thread?) (Yes, we should.) True, you can't always go by cricketing counties, but the Ridings still go back a lot further than the arbitrary West-East distinction in Sussex. The exact demarcation of the borders since the split have been less than consistent too!

I think the M6 is too strong a boundary between Wigan and points west, and the M57 M62 between St Helens and points south. On my map I twe aked St Helens' west and east boundaries to follow the motorways, I think the southern boundary could be similarly tweaked depending on what orbit Burtonwood is in.

I'm know I'm going to regret asking this, but ...
I can't help wondering, looking at this map, why special recognition is accorded to Reading when much more significant conurbations such as Bournemouth/Poole and the Medway towns are completely ignored.

I have only given unitary status to settlements with a population of 200,000 or over. None of those areas meet those requirements

Bournemouth and Poole are contiguous and together go well over 200,000 (especially if you add in other settlements just over the border).
PS What's the question mark over South Staffordshire?

That's my question mark, wondering whether it should be annexed into Shropshire. Also a wonder about tidying the Lancs/Yorks border around Slaidburn.

RIP Democracy in Dorset, died February 26th 2018. Gone but not forgotten. Sacred also to the memory of localism, which left us before its time.

Will Basingstoke & Deane still hold elections by thirds or switch to full council elections?

This is just a warding review according to the LGBCE site, so staying at thirds I assume.

As part of the local government reviews in Wales, the Local Government Boundary Commission produced a proposal for a 38 member Ceredigion with an electoral quota of 1,384 electors per councillor. My orginal submission was based on an electoral of closer to 1,450 so as a result have rejigged my submission as part of the review process and come up with 30 single member wards and 4 double member wards. In their report, the Commission suggested that they didn't want to have anything greater than a 25% variance in wards and to their credit they managed it. My submission has 4 that break that rule but I think overall I have not done too bad a job.

Generally speaking what I have done is made everything that is not Aberystwyth into a single member ward and made Aberystwyth into four double member wards. If someone who is more skilled in tables could turn that mess into a table I would be greatly appreciative of them and if members would like I could happily do a map and an estimate of how the new Ceredigion would have voted in 2017
