I agree with you Pete, the Labour result was appalling. From what I could tell they had 2 leaflets, a full canvass and a GOTV operation on the day all for less than 16% of the vote. In recent by elections they do seem to pick "old faithful" candidates, no sign of new people coming forward. Obviously our vote was ridiculously low. I was hoping for 5% on a good day! I'm not sure what has happened to UKIP locally. I understand that they called this by-election and had a good result here last year, their candidate was the chair but no one I spoke to from the other parties had seen any activity form them at all. A few people said they hadn't even seen a leaflet. The only one I came across was a ripped up one in someone's front garden. Their candidate at the general election was a very personable guy and quite well known locally (a dentist). I found him to be approachable and thoughtful but since the election I have seen and heard nothing from him and there is no mention of him on the branch website. If he has left then I reckon that is a big loss to the branch.Howard Koch - yes he has and it is I cannot say I am that surprised-when I encountered him at Hemel's 2015 election hustings back when I was the Green Party candidate for Hemel Hempstead, he always seemed more like a Eurosceptic Conservative than a 'Kipper'.

I've heard he has (re?) joined the Conservatives though it's an unconfirmed rumour. My understanding is that he stepped down as chairman to concentrate on the general election and afterwards wanted to return to the post but the new chairman (our candidate in this by-election) had other ideas and the branch pretty much split into factions with Howard's faction losing and then moving on. There were some similar kind of shennanigans in the Watford branch

Blaenau Gwent result Ind hold Ind 1085 Lab 270 80% : 20% That is a truly shocking result for Labour. So Blaenau Gwent might me interesting in the future.... the Assembly election (and Peter/Trish Law) may not be flashes in the pan.

Tbh it seems like the sort of disfunctional council where fairly frequent swings against whoever is the incumbent can be expected.

Some of the local issues noted earlier this year involve the local authority (inc. bad publicity over waste disposal matters; think this is resolved now but all the same).
Brynmawr is also an odd little town that defines itself against the rest of the borough somewhat (historically in Brecon rather than Monmouthshire) and local elections there have usually been... weird. New councillor appears to be of the LOCAL CHAMPION variety (re-opened and now runs the town's public toilets etc) that often poll well in Wales.

Tbh it seems like the sort of disfunctional council where fairly frequent swings against whoever is the incumbent can be expected. Its fundamental problem is that it's just too small to do everything it is expected to do competently. Not the only Welsh local authority with this issue either. Note that when independents or other parties take control of a South Wales council they tend to then get trashed when up for re-election.
