The Tory candidate in Glaven Valley put out this rather bizarre leaflet: Unless Glaven Valley is a very strange place I would expect that to be a counterproductive leaflet. Normal for Norfolk...

Cotswold District is a well known corrupt basketcase. Doesn't seem to stop them getting re-elected year after year - at least, not so far.

My sons' nanny lives in Adeyfield West - I'm annoyed that I forgot when I saw her on Tuesday to remind her about (or alert her to) this by-election. Hopefully she will be aware, or her partner will ensure she votes. Both are UKIP voters but she tends more toward the apathetic. I didn't imagine I would be able to draw any great insights from her about how the campaign may be going (and being post-operative was unfortunately unable to help myself). I'm disappointed to hear that Hemel UKIP have not organised a telling operation as the importance of this cannot be underestimated IMO and they are an active branch Hope nothing too serious Pete and you're back to full fitness soon.

Through, for the first time ever, LDs got a clean sweep in Cirencester (also first time since 1995 there is no Conservative councillor there). Wierdly, before 1979, Cirencester was a 10-seater.

Not a great set of results for UKIP tonight, outside of a very decent vote share in Blackpool.
But on the whole I don't think council by-elections play to their strength.

The more I look at council by-elections, the more random the results appear, and the more I tend to believe the most important factor is the effort of individual candidates to get their respective votes out. LibDems doing extremely well, however. Maybe picking up votes from anti-Brexit Tories.

I'm disappointed to hear that Hemel UKIP have not organised a telling operation as the importance of this cannot be underestimated IMO and they are an active branch Or even overestimated... and, yeah, I always forget to tell my servants which way to vote too, but like you have to rely on their menfolk to make sure they vote as they're told I think it says more about you and your weird world view that you see a self-employed child care professional as a 'servant'. Also perhaps that you make assumptions about the gender of her partner when no gender was specified. I didn't say anything either about 'telling' her which way to vote - I already know which way she votes and she has come to that decision without any help from me. I merely said that I should have mentioned that there was a by-election in her ward in case she was unaware, as these things pass by many who are less obsessed about these things than us

Oh the times we live in!Typical Lib Dem - completely out of touch with the reality of life for hard-working families. With more than one child, engaging a nanny (ie a child-carer who comes to ones own home and charges for their time) is considerably cheaper than using the services of a child-minder (ie a child-carer who looks after children in their own home or some other premises and who charges a fixed rate per child)
