Is there a story behind the Green win in Ulverston? Doesn't seem like the most obvious place to elect a Green councillor Oh I think that it is, like chunks of Skye, parts of north Sutherland and much of Wester Ross, it is infested by 'back to nature', 'alternative', 'vegan', 'arty crafty' tossers whom I consider to be potential bedrock Green support. Ugh, I can’t stand those types. Sutherland is infested with them but Wester Ross is worse I think.

It's no coincidence the Greens managed a strong second in the vast Bellingham ward.

Ugh, I can’t stand those types. Sutherland is infested with them but Wester Ross is worse I think. Creeping into parts of Northumberland too. It's no coincidence the Greens managed a strong second in the vast Bellingham ward. Decades ago Bellingham was a favourite haunt for fly fishing. There was a high Church Anglican priest who held a living with rather good stipend from one of the landed estates, and in my bank there was a list of hopefuls with their name down to be manager because the work was simple and undemanding with ample fishing and shooting. It suited country minded chaps with a private income to augment the base level managerial salary. Even then the priest confessed to me that he deplored the intrusion of what he termed sandle-wearing intellectuals from the South. The CofE had better quality chaps then. I remember the Vicar of Bearstead near Maidstone in full hunting kit under his robes with his horse tethered to a post near the vestry, when conducting Matins on days when the hunt was in that country.

That's the North and Midlands done for 1974 now. Next step: East Anglia Whilst the map is pretty and I can see which areas it covers, I have absolutely no idea what it represents or why some areas are broken down into smaller units than others.

It appears to be a map of parished and unparished (the darker colours) areas in 1974.

It appears to be a map of parished and unparished (the darker colours) areas in 1974. JGHarston has the right of it. Trickiest thing is the older boundary reviews which often don't have the detailed maps on the LGBCE website so I've had to check older parish maps. Most interesting thing is noticing the distinct pulses in changes- I think I've only come across one or two changes from the 70s. Then there's a few changes in the early 80s, the late 80s saw almost every council in the country have a parish review, followed by a district/county boundary review in the early 90s, then the big structural review that created the Unitaries in the late 90s. It's been a pretty continuous trickle of minor changes since then, with the big alterations of 2009 and the current reorgs. I'm going to have to do a once-over and check for new changes since I did the present day ones for the earliest counties I did. Wow! I'd completely forgotten that Ryedale used to share a boundary with Harrogate. I can barely get my fingers to type that, it's so absurd. York is definitely the most surprising of the Unitaries to come across- I think it might be unique in that period for both going Unitary and expanding - certainly the closest comparison would be NE Lincs or Herefordshire being 'two/three existing districts plus a bit of another one' but I'm not entirely sure those count.

Freeland and Hanborough is C/Lab and the Conservatives are defending in 2021. Hailey, Minster Lovell and Leafield is 2C but the Liberal Democrats have gained a seat in a by-election and will defend that seat in 2021. Stonesfield and Tackley is C/LD and the Conservatives are defending in 2021. Witney North is C/Ind and the Conservatives are defending in 2021. That completes Oxfordshire for 2018 on LEAP.
