These maps are great for picking up odd detached parts. Eg a bit of Gloucester Rural District in the middle of Gloucester County Borough: maps.nls.uk/view/196758254The old mental hospital and its grounds, for some arcane reason no doubt lost in the mists of time. I think this was "rectified" by the 1950s.

It's right, and you can see it in more detail here. It's made up of one building, 40 Wellington Street. Must admit I don't know why at the moment. Edit: An answer is suggested in the Survey of London www.british-history.ac.uk/survey-london/vol36/pp195-196. 40 Wellington Street was "the parsonage house of the parish of St. Mary le Strand" from 1726, although locally situate in St Paul's Covent Garden. Presumably it was included with St Mary le Strand for taxation and parish governance.

These are fascinating - looking at the York one, I hadn't realised that York Castle was a parish, not forming part of the city, and I'm trying to work out what the markings around Treasurer's House, just north-east of the Minster, indicate. maps.nls.uk/view/196757495

An oddity - in Dudley CB, Castle ward *does not* include the Castle or any of Castle Hill. It does, however, include St James's church, which is therefore not in St James's ward.

Lovely map of all the wards in Yorkshire here: (Yes I'm aware I missed a bit just North of Richmondshire, I'll fix after the upcoming by-elections)

This is one of the few map sets I haven't spent hours poring over, so that'll give me something to do on wet summer evenings! One thing that strikes me from this London map is that by 1947 the three Hornsey parts of Stoke Newington were still joined together in their own ward. I wonder how much this mattered to local people.

I wonder how much this mattered to local people. I think those three little slivers remained outside Stoke Newington and outside the LCC until the very end in 1965.

I believe it'll be because the Mental Hospital was run by the County government. Probably the NHS removed the need to safeguard the facilities for the ratepayers by making sure the county owned the building itself.
Alas, these maps, though wonderful, still don't let me answer the question as to how Shirebrook parish was divided into wards, a division which was used to create Bolsover district's wards in 1973.

What sort of period are you looking at for this info? I can have a trawl of the BNA if that's helpful. A cursory search reveals a lot of reporting of Shirebrook council itself.

Have you tried here borders.ukdataservice.ac.uk/bds.html for the 1971 boundaries or did you need something earlier?

Maps of Dunblane before 1973 show the war memorial opposite St. Mary's Church was a small island of the County surrounded by the Burgh, and remained so even when it was buried under the bypass.

By a big margin too, see the relevant election thread.

By a big margin too, see the relevant election thread. indeed, 63% from a standing start is rather remarkable. Does anyone know the story behind that?
