A town council by-election yesterday from East Northamptonshire, Raunds, Saxon ward: Con 376, Lab 330.
New Council composition Con 10, Lab 2.
Bit of a close run thing for the Saxon ward, but a win's a win.

Why can't a few more seconds (or even minutes, come to that) be spent getting the result actually right??

Agree (up to a point) I can only assume that the UKIP result, coming alphabetically after the Lib Dem one was drowned by cheering. To be fair to the lib Dem tweeter all s/he probably cared about was who had won!

Tweet the winner immediately, and the full result a short time later, seems to me the best way of doing these things.......

The Fleet ward must have one of the largest length to width ratio in the country. It's all to do with the drains... ;D My ward must be in with a good shout for an urban one for that accolade (awaits potential contenders...).

Here is some further background to the Raunds Town Council by-election in East Northamptonshire.
Raunds Town Council comprises 12 members elected from two wards, Saxon (6) and Windmill (6).
The council strengths were: Elected on 3 May 2007: Con 6, Lab 4, Green 1, No Description 1 (Con only fielded 6 candidates) Elected on 5 May 2011: Con 10, Lab 2
The result in Saxon ward on 3 May 2007 was: Con 4, Lab 2 - elected unopposed
The result in Saxon ward on 5 May 2011 was: Con 802/785/701/699/692/691, Lab 485/410/405/396
The by-election was caused by the resignation of Eileen Stubbs (Con), due to her personal life. She had campaigned against the planning proposals for a controversial housing scheme of an initial 310 homes and helped to form the pressure group "Raunds against Greenfield Extinction". East Northamptonshire District Council initially rejected the planning application, but this was overturned on appeal, with a decision on 29 July 2011 by Eric Pickles, communities secretary, a decision which was criticised publicly by Mrs Stubbs.
The result in Saxon ward on 2 August 2012 was Con 376, Lab 330.
Conservative hold - so the Council remains Con 10, Lab 2.
(The Conservatives also held a by-election in Windmill ward last Autumn, caused by the resignation of Nick Riseley.)

Interesting UKIP approach to crime in Lincoln: "How will you deal with crime and anti-social behaviour in Lincoln East?
I would look more towards inclusion than punitive measures to instil a sense of responsibility and pride in young people who engage in anti-social behaviour. If they were to be encouraged to get involved in creating a public area that they could use, such as a skate park and community garden, then they are less likely to want to damage it.
As drug addiction is a leading cause of crime, there needs to be an approach to deal with this. Perhaps a center where people can drop in, discuss their addictions and get help without fear of judgement."
You can almost hear Pete W turning in his grave!

Mr W can (of course) speak for himself, but I suspect he broadly agrees on at least the drugs part........

Seeing as we've got an epic thread revival, any urban contenders 12 years on for length to width ratio to beat Eastney & Craneswater in Portsmouth?
