The Wealden Polegate contest will be an interesting fight between the Independent Joe O'Riordan a Town councillor for the ward and the LD Don Broadbent who was District Councillor for the neighbouring Polegate South ward from 2007-2011 when he did not defend his seat . It will come down to which of the 2 the Shing family endorse as their favoured candidate .

I follow Pat Nurse on Twitter - she has an excellent blog patnurseblog.blogspot.co.uk/. I didn't realise Pat Nurse was actually her real name - I thought it was a Postman Pad type pseudonym

Nick Parker is the only candidate to actually live in the ward. The English Democrats have had to import their candidate from Holland. Boston, Holland that is.

The combination of Boston, Holland, Lincolnshire reminds me of the Irish Nationalist MP who represented a constituency called Scotland in Liverpool.

The combination of Boston, Holland, Lincolnshire reminds me of the Irish Nationalist MP who represented a constituency called Scotland in Liverpool. T P O'Connor was MP for Scotland for 44 years until his death in 1929 at the age of 91. He was unopposed for the last five elections. He was succeeded by his associate David Logan who an Irish Nationalist on Liverpool Council. By then Logan switched to Labour. Logan remained as MP until his death in 1964 at the age of 92.

It is also something to be very careful about for the recipient party. Back in 1994 when Lib Dem byelection candidate for Newham NE Alec Kellaway defected on eve of Poll he was seen on sofas with Frank Dobson and Jack Straw. They said how this showed how wonderful Labour was. Kellaway did not say 'vote Labour'. This was thought by many to be because if he endorsed Labour then the (limited but real) expenditure promoting Kellaway in the previous month might count as an indirect promotion of Labour and have to count for them too. Years on I am less convinced of this than I was at the time but a cautionary tale.

Just a thought, but what if the Lib Dems continued to deliver literature promoting him, after his endorsement of the plaid candidate?

Is he on the ballot paper? We have seen too many examples of withdrawals after the deadline for me to be convinced that he is not. If he is his agent could still authorise it. I would probably view that as a waste of money. But it might be funny :-)

what would be really funny would be if he was still on the ballot paper and won - perhaps a groundswell of opinion that people who behave badly like this should be punished Then again it could be a Brer Rabbit style ("don't throw me in the thornbush") bluff

In which case continuing to promote hime would I assume come under the heading of false statements and risk being prosecuted.
