I hope that if I lived in a constituency with a Conservative MP, that MP was assassinated in an act of political violence, and the other mainstream parties decided not to stand in the by-election, and the Conservative candidate ended up only being opposed by a bunch of fascists and freaks, that I'd make an exception to my habit of a lifetime and vote for the Tory.
(I hope I'd do that. I certainly wouldn't vote for one of the fascists or freaks.)

Were there any calls for the 1990 Eastbourne by-election to be uncontested by the main parties? That was a few years before I started taking an interest in by-elections.

There were some from the Conservatives who objected to it being contested. Unfortunately when the Conservative candidate put in his election address the argument that a Conservative defeat would be a victory for the IRA, it went down very badly and probably contributed to his surprise defeat.

My thought process is to check out the candidates to work out which ones are freaks, bonkers, fascist, or whatever, then choose between the remaining options. So far, I have excluded the ED, NF, BNP and Liberty GB candidates because they are far-right racist/fascist. I have excluded Corbyn Anti because he's for English Independence (and I'm a unionist). I exclude Ankit Love because he's obviously a nincompoop, and probably a lefty or druggy nincompoop as well. Waqas Ali Khan is formerly of UKIP, and Garry Kitchin is formerly of Green Party. In the absence of a Conservative candidate, I would consider voting for a UKIP or a Green candidate, but even those parties have lots of bonkers people among their ranks. I would have to be satisfied that the candidate is of the non-bonkers variety.

No, but there was an expectation by some people that the voters had a duty to vote Conservative. When the Lib Dem impertinently won, some people complained that the IRA had changed the political orientation of the constituency's MP. But I think that most people - including the majority of Conservatives - recognised and accepted that the decision was a democratic one made by the voters and not by the IRA. The people complaining were widely regarded as sore losers.

Looking at the list, and I think that the far-right vote is of a limited size, so the proliferation of far-right candidates could mean they all end up with next to nothing.

Sir Patrick Barnabas Burke Mayhew is an anagram of Watery barbarian humpback kisser. Sir Patrick Mayhew is an anagram of A Prick? What Misery! I was slightly disappointed when I checked this, because my memory was telling me that he was an anagram of Huge Berserk Rebel Warthog - but that one is George Herbert Walker Bush.

Not entirely sure about 'Tory', David. I spent part of my summer vac. reading (as one of the 'big books' I try to get through) a massive volume on the political thought and career of Edmund Burke, by Richard Bourke. EB always considered himself a Whig. It is true that he is arguably a founder of modern 'conservative' thought, so appropriate that all Patrick's sons have a Burke among their names. (I knew Patrick well as I organised his cricket team for 20 years, and met his sons several times; all nearly as charming as he was, though some more eccentric in their views).

Well, nobody in the 1770s called themselves a Tory. But that's not really the issue - it's about the political movement which Burke's principles led to.

Who is Corbyn Anti? A Henry E.B Mayhew stood for UKIP in West Ham in 2005. Given that Henry Mayhew lists his address as being in next-door East Ham, I am sure that they are one and the same.

This Corbyn Anti character who seems to be picking up some support here:
Do we know if he/she a right winger of the blue/purple variety, or a moderate Labour supporter disgruntled with the Corbyn leadership?

Henry Mayhew appeared in the BBC documentary "The secret history of our streets"-in the episode that dealt with the gentrification of Portland Road in Kensington. He was also a Committee member (and possibly Chairman at some point) of the same Conservative Ward Committee that David Cameron chaired briefly in the early 1990s

As I said above, "By Election Protest" is a registered description of a political party registered in August with the name "English Independence" and with leader one Neil Humphrey of Nottingham. They had some other registered descriptions rejected, including "Sod Scottish Referendum", "Keep Calm and Vote English", "Hang Murderers Death-Penalty" and "Just Hang 'm High to Die". ( Herald article) So I don't think this is some moderate Labour supporter...

( Herald article) So I don't think this is some moderate Labour supporter... Neil Humphrey was English Democrat candidate for Berwick-upon-Tweed at the 2015 GE. His new party is an ED splinter. Richard Edmonds is a veteran of the British nationalist scene who first joined the NF more than forty years ago. As one of the leading factional allies of the late John Tyndall, he joined the pro-Tyndall New National Front in 1980 which became the BNP, then left the Griffinite version of that party to return to the NF. Dave Furness was the BNP's London Mayoral candidate earlier this year. Therese Hirst used to lead the remnant of Kilroy-Silk's Vanitas. Jack Buckby is one of the few members of Liberty GB, which is one of several parties/groups that could claim to be the political wing of the EDL. In his undergraduate days at Liverpool University c.2013, Buckby was a prominent member of the BNP's student wing.
