Very niche - the Todmorden parish elections of 1976:- www.dropbox.com/s/byp90hzt6dbntwf/Todmorden%201976.jpg?dl=0When Todmorden MB was amalgamated into Calderdale MBC in 1974 the existing municipal borough was granted parish status. The 18 councillors (elected in 1970/71/72) and six aldermen (elected -I think - in 1967/1970) were renamed parish councillors. Any vacancies up to the 1976 elections were filled via co-option. The elections to Todmorden Town Council are more competitive than the elections to Todmorden Borough, although all out (every four years) v election by thirds. From 1958 (every councillor returned unopposed) to 1972 there was only one year - 1971 - which saw an election in all the six wards. The current mayor is Steph Booth. Her term ends this month. www.todmordencouncil.org.uk/mayor-and-deputy-mayor/

Splutter!! 157 members! Even at it's largest on the same pre-1974 boundaries as Liverpool Sheffield only ever maxed out at 81 members. How could Liverpool with a population smaller than Sheffield justify twice as many councillors? Ok, in 1950 Liverpool County Borough's population was 800,000 to Sheffield County Borough's 580,000, but it's still extreme. Larger city, but smaller wards.

I've added the Liverpool ward map (outline) 1895-1953 to the folder. The council did peak at 160 members.

I subtracted 3*3 from the 90-member 1974 council for the three wards that were added. Completely forgot the aldermen.

Michael Steed was my tutor at Manchester University around that time. It must have been one hell of a commute.

Re Liverpool and the size of its council...there was a proposal in the 1950s to cut representation to one member per ward...'if 630 MPs were enough to run the country's affairs, 160 members of a council for a city the size of Liverpool are far too many. It would be better to reduce the representatives for each ward from four to one and pay the men so elected a salary for full-time service to the corporation.'

Michael Steed was my tutor at Manchester University around that time. It must have been one hell of a commute. It was probably a lot easier then than it would be now - much less traffic on the roads 40 years ago. Nowadays West Yorkshire is a no-go area in the rush hour - you can't get in and you can't get out! A lot of people live there and use the train into Manchester. In those days he probably only had to go in a couple of days a week

What is '[the] National Propagandist'? The opposite of a "local campaigner"? But seriously folks... Throughout her career Jessie Stephen had roles in various organizations which involved editing magazines, sending out press releases etc...particularly for suffrage groups and the ILP. So I guess it is a reference to that.

Just a reminder that it's only very recently that the term 'propaganda' has become pejorative. It used to be a neutral term for printed material designed to get support for a particular cause.

Aah, so it's job title? Thanks.
I've come across Conservative association minutes that refer to the Propaganda Officer.

Didn't Clark opt to take a cabinet position for a year rather than a junior post for the whole of Blair's first term?
