Okay, so Alexander Van der Bellen is the next president of Austria barring a heart attack, plane crash or similar.

That's just embarrassing for Team Proporz. A quick look suggests that the last time the SPOe got under 12% was the 1907 election in Cisleithenia, when they were up against Karl Lueger and the SPOe had an active and successful branch in Trieste.
As for OeVP, whoever on earth thought Andreas Khol was the answer needs their head shaking.

They gave up on the election after Griss announced she was running and just needed a stand-in (it would have been too humiliating endorsing her). No one thought Khol would do well. This was essentially a race between two Indies, a centre-right and a centre-left (Van der Bellen ran as an Independent, though with the backing of his party), plus the FPÖ. Team Proporz should probably just have stayed out, but that would presumably have been too radical a solution.

Team Proporz would never give up that sense of the divine right to rule, I suppose- they aren't fond of the idea that nobody would miss them if they weren't there. They've previously enjoyed backing preferred independents who broadly cover both parties.

In January 2015 Griss said she would think about running if she could be a joint candidate of the SPÖ and ÖVP, but added that this was unrealistic.
In October she then announced in a radio interview that she was "ready for the race to the Hofburg next year". In December Griss finally announced (via Facebook and a YouTube video) that she was running as an independent.
She got the highest level of campaign contributions of all candidates and was backed by heavyweights in finance and industry.
Former ÖVP party chairman and Vice Chancellor Erhard Busek backed her, which provoked fierce criticism from his own party, and calls for his expulsion, the former Secretary General of ÖVP and the former federal chairman of the party's labour org ÖAAB, also backed Griss.
She was the Conservative candidate and running Khol just prevented her from getting in the run-off. In that way Khol actually attracted a bit too many votes. All in all pretty stupid. They caused internal rifts and got humiliated instead of just backing Griss.

That SPÖ or at least ÖVP ("Independent" Mrs.Griss was once one of their judge-puppets) didn't support her was not understandable to many (me included). Certainly SPÖVP saw her as too politically naive and thus risky before and after the election. Hoping for heavy mistakes and collapses of Griss, VanDerBellen and Hofer, the SPÖVP-candidates weren't intended as pseudoRunners.

She was the Conservative candidate Griss fits more to NEOS than to ÖVP, so partly she was naively leftextreme (Unlimited asylum!, InheritanceTax aso.). Also she wasn't supported by BigBusiness coherently, only by few "liberal" singles.

I do not think its accurate to say she wanted "unlimited" asylum, and its not a matter the president deals with anyhow.

Griss announced, that she would not sign a law with a cap on RecognizedRefugees: kurier.at/politik/inland/bundespraesidentenwahl/griss-wuerde-als-praesidentin-obergrenze-verhindern/190.673.482 Thus she didn't want unlimited immigration, but unlimited asylum.

PostalVotes will certainly give prof. VanDerBellen a RelativeMajority in the districts of Meidling (=Vienna, XII.), Mödling, LinzCity, perhaps also Bregenz and Dornbirn:
