Version 2: 1 London Central 71901 Yes 2 Westminster West 72209 Yes 3 Hampstead 69849 Yes 4 St Pancras and Regent's Park 70135 Yes 5 Islington North 73970 Yes 6 Islington South and Shoreditch 75059 Yes 7 Hackney South 74212 Yes 8 Hackney North 73337 Yes This doesn't belong in pitchfork bait! Perfectly reasonable if you ask me. I'd rename your (2) Paddington and Pimlico.

Perfectly reasonable if you ask me. I'd rename your (2) Paddington and Pimlico. Probably perfectly reasonable if you asked Labour as well (the Cities of London and Westminster constituency could barely be gerrimandered better for us than it currently is). This is probably a good example of using a pitchfork bait idea (Westminster+City+Hackney) to fix a real problem (Camden being in the irritating zone where it's above 1.90 quotas but has no combination of wards that gives two within-range constituencies). It's probably too radical an idea for the BCE, but it's got a certain elegance to it.

Let's put a few quid on the name "London Central" appearing in the provisional recommendations.

Not pitchfork bait as such, but probably doesn't belong on the 'serious' threads I'm almost loath to readmit Chipping Barnet to the fold the way it votes these days, but Borehamwood will probably keep it on the straight and narrow now..

Basildon always gets split. What if we did it to Brentwood instead? Thurrock 73347 Brentwood & East Thurrock 76391 Basildon 70581 Billericay & Ongar 76206 Epping Forest 76473 Harlow 70190 All the wards identified as Brentwood in the name are in the Brentwood seat, but no, I don't think I could convince the Commission that Hutton and Shenfield are entirely separate settlements with nothing in common with Brentwood. Langdon Hills is also in the seat a) to make the numbers work and b) because if you're going to do a gerrymander that probably doesn't even work these days, why not go the whole hog?

'Gerrymanders which no longer work' is an interesting theme in itself. I was discussing one in Bristol the other day. Another of my old favourites was Hampstead & St Johns Wood

To be fair, Labour led the Tories by about 1300 votes in the local elections in 2019 (though would presumably have won Nethermayne but for the independent) so it might still work, even if it clearly wouldn't have done in December 2019.

A piece of pitchfork bait I accidentally created on my first attempt at giving Oxfordshire seven seats:
Oxford North (71,331). All Oxford wards except Blackbird Leys, Cowley, Littlemore, Lye Valley, Northfield Brook, Rose Hill & Iffley, and Temple Cowley. Oxford South & Henley (70,059). The Oxford wards of Blackbird Leys, Cowley, Littlemore, Lye Valley, Northfield Brook, Rose Hill & Iffley, and Temple Cowley, and the South Oxfordshire wards of Benson & Crowmarsh, Berinsfield, Chalgrove, Garsington & Horspath, Henley-on-Thames, Sandford & The Whittenhams, Sonning Common, Watlington, and Woodcote & Rotherfield.

Now that really would see every garden centre in rural Oxfordshire sell right out of pitchforks!

I found a valid plan that creates seven Devonwall seats.

I found a valid plan that creates seven Devonwall seats. hmm.. new use of the word valid. Why is that Truro/Bodmin, etc shaped like a pitchfork?

We all know that Surrey is a bit awkward with 12 seats, and that if it didn't need to be paired with East Sussex, West Sussex could stand alone. Which means: Crawley 74446 East Grinstead 73003 Burgess Hill & South Downs 71945 Horsham 70063 Chichester 70530 Bognor Regis 73762 Littlehampton 76540 Worthing 75581 Shoreham & Worthing East 71100 Hove 73726 Brighton Pavilion 75850 Brighton Kemptown 75254* Lewes 76061* Wealden 76672 Eastbourne 75598 Bexhill & Battle 76540 Hasting & Rye 75581 East Surrey & High Weald 76039 Reigate 69742 Epsom & Ewell 71089 Dorking 70780 SW Surrey 76200 Guildford 72173 Esher & Leatherhead 74529 Walton & Weybridge 73112 Spelthorne 72897 Runnymede 71675 Woking 71737 Surrey Heath 70701 The screenshot is from an old version which split Newhaven. I've since realised you can add Kingston, Plumpton and Ditchling to Kemptown instead, which is also bad but slightly less so. Obviously, this is not a serious suggestion, but I was surprised how well the seats in Surrey worked. Makes me wonder if putting Edenbridge in with Surrey would open up any new options in Kent.

But for the pitchfork seat itself those other seats in Surrey and Sussex work really well. I wonder if there's actually a case for adding say Edenbridge from Kent to the East Surrey seat as that is the source of the problems elsewhere in Surrey as this demonstrates. Not sure if that would leave Kent short but we're only talking about fewer than 7,000 voters
