In 2012, the comparable year to this in the electoral cycle, there were 48 by-elections in England during the January to April period whilst there were 23 single seat by-elections on the annual election date in May along with 29 casual seats contested in "double" / "triple" elections.
In 2016 there are 53 by-elections called, with the possibility of a few more, in January to April of which 48 are in England, 4 Scotland and 1 in Wales.

Two by-elections in Hackney: Rick Muir (Hackney Downs) and Louisa Thomson (Stoke Newington) both Labour have stood down for personal reasons. Presumably elections will be on 5 May.

Both of the Southampton vacancies will have their by-elections on 5th May - that's according to our Returning Officer at SCC.

Angela Roberts, Conservative councillor for Carpenders Park ward, Three Rivers DC, has resigned. I assume this will not be too late to create a 'double' election in the ward on 5 May. Cllr Roberts was only re-elected last May, and the councillor normally up for re-election in the ward, Terry Dos Ramos, is retiring from the council. |

The latest possible date to call a by-election for the 5th May is Wednesday 30th March. We'll probably get a few more in the next week.
