Constituencies Berwick and Morpeth - Current Berwick Upon Tweed constituency plus Morpeth and a bit of rural Northumberland. Ashington, Bedlington and Blyth - Most of the current Wansbeck constituency along with the town of Blyth. Cramlington and Blyth - The large village of Cramlington (currently in Blyth Valley) combined with the Newcastle suburbs surrounding Killingworth (currently Tyneside North). Tynemouth - Minor alterations but basically the same. Newcastle East and Wallsend - Loses all of Jesmond but gains remaining areas of Tyneside North constituency near Wallsend. Newcastle Central - Given remaining East Gosforth and all of Jesmond. Newcastle West and Ponteland - Loses East Gosforth but gains all of Ponteland (currently Hexham). Hexham and Consett - Loses northern wards, mainly Ponteland, along with Prudhoe, but gains Morpeth area (currently Durham North-West). Gateshead West and Prudhoe - Gains Prudhoe and reunites Dunston area but loses wards in south-east Gateshead. Gateshead East and Hebburn - Loses Dunston area but gains east of Gateshead and Hebburn (all currently Jarrow). Jarrow and Washington - Loses east Gateshead, Hebburn and Boldon but gains all of Washington area. South Shields - Gains Boldon. Sunderland North - similar to current Central constituency, gains western area of Sunderland but loses more southern area. Sunderland South - Gains some central areas of Sunderland, loses parts of Houghton. Chester-le-Street - Renamed from Durham North-West. Gains south-eastern Gateshead wards. Durham - Gains couple of wards west of the city. Peterlee - Renamed from Eaisngton. Gains some western wards, mainly from Sedgefield. Hartlepool - Minor expansion to the north. Teesside North - Billingham and northern Stockton. Teesside East - Combination of rural Cleveland area and Redcar. Teesside Central - Central and eastern Middlesbrough. Teesside West - Southern Stockton and western Middlesbrough. Sedgefield - Gains rural wards west of Stockton and Spennymoor area, loses northern wards to Peterlee along with some rural wards and part of Aycliffe to Darlington constiruency. Darlington - Gains rural wards and part of Aycliffe (currently Sedgefield). Bishop Auckland - Gains many wards from Durham North-West but loses Spennymoor area. Some thoughts: Very happy I figured out Teesside area, previous attempts led to western Stockton being stuck in Sedgefield so definitely an improvement. Sedgefield is still an awkward constituency but it looks marginally more geographically acceptable. Would have preferred to avoid splitting Aycliffe but Darlington's placement means it cannot expand west to Barnard and the town itself is too big to accept the extra rural wards west of Stockton. Not thrilled with Jarrow and Washington geographically but was necessary to avoid arbitrary town/city division. I think my Newcastle area proposal works well overall. Any ideas for Cramlington and Killingworth new name? Most appropriate would be Cramlington and Newcastle Suburbs but we obviously don't use the latter in the UK. Ashington, Bedlington and Blyth is a mouthful but is needed to indicate area in my view. I welcome any suggestions for improvement

Teesside West - Southern Stockton and western Middlesbrough. I welcome any suggestions for improvement It seems strange to me that it seems that people like to get rid of county names i.e. North West Durham but would include the name Teesside which was an invented area that joined parts of North Yorkshire and Durham in 1968 and was replaced by Cleveland County Council in the 1970s which included Hartlepool to many peoples displeasure. I would suggest that Teesside has no place in the naming of a constituency.
I think Teesside has as much going for it as Humberside or Avon and the less said about the County of Cleveland the better. The Tees has always been the logical and cultural border and is probably a factor in the reason the people of Yarm hate being in the Stockton (Durham) constituency.

Teesside has been largely replaced by Tees Valley, which includes Darlington. This is the name of the combined authority. Cleveland survives only as the name of the police authority.

Teesside was replaced by Cleveland in the 1970s and Cleveland disappeared in the 1990s to be replaced by the unitary authorities that are now joining together to reform Cleveland and then add Darlington to create Tees Valley.
I have no idea whether this is a good idea but I do object to the name Teesside for constituency names when apart from about 7 years in the late 1960s/early 1970s it has no historical reason to exist.
Oh, and Cleveland Fire Service.

The reason I used Teesside is because many people (including myself) would consider that the name of the area. I consider Teesside acceptable in the same sense that there is currently a North Tyneside constituency. I created 4 constituencies in the largely continuously urban area and the alternative name would be constituencies like 'Middlesbrough West and Stockton South'. I would personally consider Teesside acceptable but I'm open to other suggestions if they only cover the 4 constituencies I.e. not a larger area.

I agree that Teesside is a generally accepted name for the urban area (indeed it's gone into this week's previews), but I would still avoid using it in a constituency name. Teesside East is a particularly poor name for the constituency you've drawn because you can't reasonably describe Saltburn as being in Teesside.

I understand why you have done it but I think that it would be better if the primary towns in the constituency were named. For example Redcar & Cleveland, Middlesbrough North, Middlesbrough South & Thornaby and Stockton.
Having lived for many years in the area before leaving I can assure you that asking people to identify Teesside on a map will get some quite startling results whereas asking where Middlesbrough or Redcar are will at least get the correct area or indeed correct SIDE of the country identified.
Of course most people who use this site could identify the location of Teesside but surely the naming of constituencies should allow that most of them could be identified by the public?

Jamie, I'm sure if you called the seats 'Tees Banks East', &c, everyone would be content. Seriously though - It's a good map (names aside), but I'm worried about the amount of unnecessary boundary-crossing. Specifically, the numbers in N Tyneside and Darlington are perfect for two seats and one seat respectively, yet you've crossed the boundaries of both these authorities and I'm not sure that you've actually gained very much by doing so.

I've changed the names to Tees Bank. What Darlington constituency would you mean? The town itself is 64188. Any expansion eastwards would cut off the more rural wards which currently form Sedgefield. This would mean they would need to be absorbed into Tees Bank seats. This would bring them way over quota so would require Billingham to become part of Sedgefield plus other minor adjustments. If Billingham is being split from Tees Bank it works but otherwise I can't see how it can be done. I agree it would be preferable to keep North Tyneside together. However, Newcastle is way under quota. This can partially be solved by having the western constituency absorb Ponteland. However, this still leaves 2 constituencies way under quota so expansion into North Tyneside is probably required. Considering the links between Newcastle and North Tyneside I don't find it too egregious. The only solution which leaves North Tyneside together would require a Cramlington, Newcastle West and Ponteland seat which in my view is a stretch too far.

Redcar Middlesbrough East Middlesbrough West & Thornaby Stockton
Putting Billingham in with Sedgefield does seem to improve the map to my non-local eyes. I'd quite like to put the border along the Tees, but I can't quite see how to do that without doing something less than satisfactory elsewhere in Stockton borough.

Thanks for pointing out Thornaby (my local eyes missed it). Adjusting a couple of wards makes a much more logical boundary between 'Middlesbrough West and Thornaby' and Stockton. It is certainly preferable to have Billingham in a Teesside based constituency but as you said it does damage other constituencies. With the reformed Teesside constituencies, I can now the remaining Newton Aycliffe ward out of Darlington and into Sedgefield. Considering Sedgefield is a small town, it makes more sense to call this constituency Billingham and Newton Aycliffe in my view.

I have Billingham with Sedgefield and Newton Aycliffe as well. It looks like the best solution.

Based upon my boundary plan, these would be the results: Redcar - Safe Labour Middlesbrough East - Safe Labour Middlesbrough West and Thornaby - Semi-marginal Labour (to Conservatives) Stockton - Semi-marginal Labour (to Conservatives) Sedgefield - Safe Labour Darlington - Ultra-marginal Conservative (to Labour) Hartlepool - Semi-marginal Labour (to UKIP) Bishop Auckland - Safe Labour Durham - Safe Labour Peterlee - Safe Labour Sunderland South - Safe Labour Sunderland North - Safe Labour South Shields - Safe Labour Jarrow and Washington - Safe Labour Chester-le-Street - Safe Labour Gateshead East and Hebburn - Safe Labour Gateshead West and Prudhoe - Safe Labour Consett and Hexham - Semi-marginal Conservative (to Labour) Berwick and Morpeth - Semi-marginal Conservative (to Liberal Democrats) Ashington, Bedlington and Blyth - Safe Labour Tynemouth - Safe Labour Cramlington and Killingworth - Safe Labour Newcastle Central - Safe Labour Newcastle East and Wallsend - Safe Labour Newcastle West and Ponteland - Semi-marginal Labour (to Conservatives)
Currently - 26 Labour, 3 Conservative. My Plan - 22 Labour, 2 Conservative, 1 too close to call. 7 seats are reasonably competitive.

West Durham & Teesdale is remarkable. Chopwell area to Barnard Castle (although not all of it! Only the B.C. West ward is included). Main town Consett, also includes Crook. Willington is included in Bishop Auckland. Tow Law is in Durham City.

Sedgefield still exists and in a fairly recognisable form, but the name is gone: East Durham now. Feels pointed.

My God. The new Blaydon crosses the Tyne to take in Newburn and large tracts of West Newcastle.

Newcastle remains within three constituencies but two have bits added on. The current wards split the following ways (there's ward boundary changes in 2018).
Newcastle upon Tyne East Westgate Wingrove Byker Dene North Heaton North Jesmond Ouseburn South Heaton South Jesmond Walker Walkergate East Gosforth
Newcastle upon Tyne North West Ponteland East and Stannington (in Northumberland County Council) Blakelaw Fenham Kenton West Gosforth Castle Fawdon Parklands Westerhope Woolsington
Blaydon (the first six wards are Blaydon, the final five are Newcastle) Blaydon Crawcrook and Greenside Dunston Hill and Whickham East Ryton, Crookhill and Stella Whickham North Whickham South and Sunniside Benwell and Scotswood Elswick Denton Lemington Newburn
