Statement from the Independent (and former Labour candidate) in Oban North & Lorn:

I have previously said that if elected and later changing my affiliation, I would resign and seek reelection. I reiterate this now. To be a party candidate I would have to know likely party policies over my time in office.

‘In the last year, Labour in Scotland has drifted from Jim Murphy’s fiery Scottish patriotism to the steady but often low profile leadership of Kezia Dugdale.

‘How the radical shift that elected Jeremy Corbyn will affect policy in Scotland is unknown.

‘Therefore I could not in all honesty tell voters what Scottish Labour would be proposing next year.

‘I am not trying to hide my national politics – I am still a Labour member despite my attempt to resign from Scottish Labour .

‘Nor am I wanting just to jump on a bandwagon. Since the referendum, it seems to me far more natural for people’s politics to differ in elections to Kilmory, Holyrood, Westminster and Brussels.

‘For some, party politics may have an important part to play in Argyll and Bute. I respect that.

‘For me though the freedom to work across political boundaries and represent the entire electorate with integrity has led me to stand as an Independent.’

The day of an "open primary" to select a Conservative candidate for the Commons, they toured all evangelical churches of a constituency to get them to vote for their very religious candidate. Or I'm confusing them with another evangelical group.

Let's say I'm wary of religious groups trying to impose their morals through politics.

Conservative Party faction in "taking advantage of the open primary system" shocker.

Actually, that's a tactic that seems somewhat at odds with the way pretty much all the groups belonging to Christians in Politics work. In the UK, you don't persuade Christians to get politically active by pushing support for a factional candidate, nor does doing so portray Christianity in a good light within the rest of your party. I'm rather surprised that whoever did that didn't get themselves into hot water with quite a few of the leaders of those churches. Clergy are more likely to be left-wing than laity, and in my experience most British churches avoid anything that might look like an explicit endorsement of a political party, even if the candidate is a member of their church.
