Town and Community Council Byelections

Dorchester Town Council is an overnight count, though Dorset Council are not the best at updating their website. Won't be at the count, I'll pass along any info I get from my local contacts. Incidentally, for a town council by election there has been quite a healthy campaign, Greens making a serious effort for the first time I know of in Dorchester.

I never watched “Little Britain” regularly, but I’ve often wondered if there was some sort of joke in the fact that the character’s name was “Daffyd” rather than “Dafydd”. i.e. was he only pretending to be Welsh? Was it ever explained or referenced specifically? Also there seems to be some inconsistency in the name of the town “Llanddewi” or “Llandewi” (?)

Llanddewi is correct. The personal name is Dewi, but it mutates when preceded by Llan- to ddewi. And the misspelling in Little Britain was a fairly obvious joke.

There still seems to be a bit of confusion surrounding that Cardiganshire result. I've no doubt the vote totals are correct, but carolus didn't list it as a double vacancy (else I wouldn't have tried to make the 'only councillor' joke) yet two candidates have been declared elected. Was that just on oversight at this end, or has the Returning Officer erred in not drawing straws?

North Yorkshire (Pateley Bridge Town Council (High and Low Bishopside ward)) - Skaife 234, Critchley 212, Wardman 171, Ward 54 - all No Description - first three elected (electorate 1,695; turnout 17.46%)

Somerset (Cutcombe) - Yiend 92, Anson 7 - both No Description (electorate 346; turnout 28.6%)

Torridge (Northam Town Council (Northam Orchard Hill ward)) - Brading 234, Woodhouse 214, Sargent 200, Jackson 48 - all standing with Independent in their description (electorate 4,098; turnout 17.18%)

The Northam by-election came about when Jo Manley (Independent) did not sign the Declaration of Acceptance of Office, despite having served on the Town Council since 2019.

There is a by-election on Thursday, 27 July, in Park ward of Didcot Town Council (South Oxfordshire).

On 2 May 2019, Didcot elected a town council of 21 - Lab 9, Ind 7, Lib Dem 3, Con 2. Both Conservatives were in All Saints ward.
On 4 May 2023, Didcot elected a town council of 21 - Lib Dem 12, Lab 8, Con 1. The sole Conservative, Karen Burman, elected in Park ward, did not sign the Declaration of Acceptance of Office.

The result in Park ward on 2 May 2019 (3 seats) was Ind 407/380, Lab 369/333/271, Lib Dem 359, Con 306/297/244 - 2 Ind and 1 Lab elected.

The result in Park ward on 4 May 2023 (5 seats) was Lab 637/622/573, Lib Dem 469/456/423/390/358, Con 463/438/427/423/420, Social Democratic Party 275 - 3 Lab, 1 Lib Dem and 1 Con elected.

The candidates on Thursday are Con, Lab, Green and Lib Dem. The Conservative candidate is Anthony Dearlove, who was elected in All Saints in 2019 and defeated there in 2023. The Lib Dem candidate, Terry Southwood, was also defeated in All Saints in 2023. The Lab and Green candidates are new.
