The most common appelation I've heard for Wivenhoe is "a drinking village, with a slight fishing problem." Can't say there's ever been any particular political distinction to the pubs - I know plenty of intellectual/professional types who would have drunk in the Black Buoy or the Horse & Groom during Neil's time. Pub preference was traditionally decided by whether or not they'd fallen out with the landlord of the Rose & Crown. The Black Buoy was bought out by the locals a few years back and is extremely nice these days ( finsobruce will back me up on this, I took him there when he came up to help me out in the 2015 campaign.) The Rose & Crown has been resting on its laurels for a few years now and only really has the location going for it. The Greyhound is significantly less scuzzy than it was, which is welcome in one way but a shame in another. The Station continues to be tiny but continues to do what it does well. The Horse & Groom is never open when I'm passing by, but I can't say I've ever particularly felt the loss. The Flag was shut for a number of years, but the present incarnation seems good enough. It is indeed a nice pub. I think I may have left my glasses there.

Yes, the Black Buoy does look good now. If no loss is the Park Hotel, truly a terrible pub! The Horse and Groom is a proper old fashioned 12-3, 6-11 pub.

By-election in the North ward of the city of Ely, 6th October. Candidates Lab/Ind/No Description/Spotted in Ely.
I'm the Labour candidate, the No Description is a Lib Dem, so my best guess is that the independent is the unofficial Tory candidate. Spotted in Ely appears to be a local events listing website, so I assume the candidate runs it or something.

The Independent is a former mayor, councillor for 9 years who lost his seat in an upset in 2015.

Are you sure that was three gains for the LDs in Teignmouth as there were only two candidates on these numbers. Also, any idea on the new composition of the councils?
