Ely North turnout 16.17%. That's impressively awful, even for a town council by-election.

Given that we had a crap candidate who only bothered going doorknocking a couple of times, I think we're quite happy to take that result. We upset people enough to get an anonymous letter attacking us in the local paper, which is after all the main fun to be derived from local politics.

Ely North Independent John Yates was supported by the local Conservatives and took over 50% of the votes cast. Richard Morgan is a Lib Dem activist who had previously stood in both District and City elections. There is a persistent tradition in Ely of a non-party City Council but recent contested elections have seen candidates unofficially backed by the parties. There are 8 known Conservatives on the council; 5 Lib Dems and 2 Independents.

Hi Mark
Yes - there is a bumper crop of town council by-elections on 27 October, including the five in Seaford and another three for Dover Town Council.
The five by-elections in Seaford all arise from resignations as follows: Seaford Central - Isabelle Murray (Lib Dem) - to take a gap year from her full time studies, which will include travelling abroad for long periods of time Seaford Central - Debbie Silvey-Adam (Con) - has struggled to fully participate in the council activities, due to illness and family time demands Seaford North - Carol Campbell (Con) - for health reasons, following a recent illness Seaford South - Rob Chambers (Con) - to begin a teacher training course Seaford West - Marion Lambert (Lib Dem) - after a recent bout of ill health, which has significantly restricted her ability to serve as a councillor
The current council composition is Con 7, Lib Dem 5, Lab 1, UKIP 1, Independent 1, Vacant 5
The three by-elections in Dover Town arise from the (?) resignations of: Castle - Stewart Dimmock (Con) Maxton, Elms Vale and Priory - Deborah Boulares (Con) Town and Pier - Ronald Wright (Independent)
The current council composition is Lab 6, Independent 3, Co-opted 3, Con 2, No Description 1, Vacant 3
Other by-elections on 27 October in: Caerwent (Caerwent) in Monmouthshire Holme Valley (Brockholes) in Kirklees Houghton Regis (Houghton Hall) in Central Bedfordshire Keynsham (Keynsham East) in Bath and North East Somerset Kirkburton (Lepton) in Kirklees Newhaven (Newhaven Meeching) in Lewes
There is also a non-political by-election in Madeley (Newcastle-under-Lyme), whilst three vacancies in Cliffsend (Thanet) attracted no nominations at all.

Listener Your detailed reasons for resignations of Seaford Town Councillors, along with your report that Thanet couldn't find candidates, seems to chime with an awful lot of town and parish councils - people have such busy lives, and so many other pressing issues in their lives, there simply aren't enough people to do what is essentially a voluntary job.

I think it constitutes either a sabbatical year or, more likely, some kind of Erasmus year abroad arrangement.
