By-election on Wivenhoe TC this Thursday
Lab/Fighting for Wivenhoe/No Description
The No Description was a Lib Dem candidate in 2016. Traditionally Conservatives have run as independents at the town council level in Wivenhoe, but I've no idea if that is the case this time.

The Fighting for Wivenhoe candidate is seconded by the agent of the three Independent candidates in the Borough election this year. At least two of them appear to actually be supporting the No Description candidate, however. No polling cards have been sent out (I believe the Town Council had a flyer delivered, as it was cheaper), so turnout is probably going to be abysmal (though a fair number of leaflets have gone out).

Labour won the Wivenhoe TC byelection. I'm expecting Jeremy Corbyn to mention it in his next speech.

I don't know whether that reputation has faded.

Census 2011 in Wivenhoe parish showed 2,433 out of 6,349 usual residents aged 16 or over had level 4 qualifications (ie degree level or over) - nearly two out of every five. Also 852 out of 3,741 usual residents 16-74 in employment were employed in education - a proportion twice the average in Colchester district.

Whilst looking at the Kidderminster Shuttle's website for comments about the town council by-election I noticed one of the headings for a news item was: "Shamed teacher struck off for having sex with pupil has been working in missionary position". This was surely written with tongue in cheek, wasn't it? Or was tongue somewhere else?

Yes - a frequent 'complaint' on the doorstep from the non-lefties of Wivenhoe.

Lymington & Pennington Town Council, Pennington ward: Jack Davies (Lib Dem) 402 Michaela Morris (Con) 401 Jayne Head (Ind) 119 Lena Samuels (Lab) 55
Lib Dem gain from Con
Seat was won on drawing of lots. Neither Lib Dem, Lab or the Indy fought the seat last year when 5 Conservatives and one 'Pennington Community' were elected. The other candidates last time being a different Independent, Green and a sixth Tory. The by-election Indy stood as a Lib Dem in the Buckland ward of the Town Council last year. This brings Lib Dem representation back onto the council.

At one point, there was a Wivenhoe dwelling sociology lecturer- Phil someone- who was a member of Colchester BC.
They all drank in the Rose and Crown and the Greyhound. To avoid that I drank initially in the Black Buoy and latterly the Horse and Groom. It did feel at times like the place had been taken over by sociologists and literature lecturers, with students in those departments forming a disproportionate element of the student population. In contrast, the economists maximised utility and lived in the town.

Previously a Southend councillor, 1995-7; later a council candidate in Argyll and Bute, 2007 & a Cardiff councillor, 2012-3 (where he challenged the sitting Labour leader). Parliamentary candidate for North Essex, 2001. I'm not particularly averse to any of the Wivenhoe pubs, though I'm not sure if I've ever been in the Flag. I prefer the Black Buoy and the Greyhound (or the Horse and Groom if I'm up that way), but its marginal.

He lived in that house on the left hand side of the High Street as you go down that looks like. An old town hall.

The most common appelation I've heard for Wivenhoe is "a drinking village, with a slight fishing problem." Can't say there's ever been any particular political distinction to the pubs - I know plenty of intellectual/professional types who would have drunk in the Black Buoy or the Horse & Groom during Neil's time. Pub preference was traditionally decided by whether or not they'd fallen out with the landlord of the Rose & Crown. The Black Buoy was bought out by the locals a few years back and is extremely nice these days ( finsobruce will back me up on this, I took him there when he came up to help me out in the 2015 campaign.) The Rose & Crown has been resting on its laurels for a few years now and only really has the location going for it. The Greyhound is significantly less scuzzy than it was, which is welcome in one way but a shame in another. The Station continues to be tiny but continues to do what it does well. The Horse & Groom is never open when I'm passing by, but I can't say I've ever particularly felt the loss. The Flag was shut for a number of years, but the present incarnation seems good enough.
