19 January: Durham, Evenwood & Barony, Witton. Con* I was going to express surprise that the Conservatives got this uncontested, but turns out it’s been uncontested 12 times since the May 2021 elections and it covers not Witton Park but rather a small part of Etherley (as of 2015, 198 electors) that’s not in Etherley parish. Sounds like a review of the parish boundaries may be needed?

”The new system”? I don’t think I know about that. Do you mean a legal requirement, or a party rule? How do they define “recent”?
Which raises the question how would they know if someone decided to lie about it?

If you watch Alan Sugar's The Apprentice, you will have seen that one of this year's candidates is Gregory Ebbs, whom Lord Sugar described as a Liberal Democrat candidate. Gregory corrected him - "I am an elected Liberal Democrat councillor".
In fact he stood unsuccessfully on 6 May 2021 in the Whitchurch South division of Shropshire County Council, where he was defeated by the Conservative in a two-horse race by 588 votes to 346.
He was one of five candidates returned unopposed in the Whitchurch South ward of Whitchurch Town Council and is the only political councillor amongst the 15 town councillors.

The Newquay by-election is a Green Party gain from Conservative (undefended).
The by-election was caused by the resignation of Michelle Johns (Conservative), one of six town councillors elected unopposed on 6 May 2021. The other five are another Conservative, Lib Dem, Reform UK, Independent and a Non-Political Description.
The 20-seat town council was reorganised from 7 wards in 2017 to 4 wards in 2021.

The majority of English parish councils have all-out elections on 4 May 2023 and are therefore frozen by the six-month rule.

Wells City is a Lib Dem gain from Wells Independents. Emma Knott (Wells Independents) was elected on 5 May 2022 and disqualified for non-attendance on 17 November 2022.
The new political make-up of the city council (16 seats) is Wells Independents 8, Lib Dem 6, Con 2.
Presumably this is the last ever election organised by Mendip District Council.

Parish & Town elections took place round here in May 2022, alongside the new Somerset Unitary, so no 6 month rule. I know of at least one potential non attendance disqualification.

The vacancy in Llandybie is caused by the resignation of Dai Nicholas (PC), who is also one of two councillors for the Llandybie division on Carmarthenshire County Council. He resigned as a member of Llandybie Community Council on 27 October 2022, in order to take up the post of Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer to Llandybie Community Council, with effect from 1 December 2022. Does Clerk to a large community council with a budgeted spend in 2020-21 of just under £237,000 and a precept for the current year of £180,000 count as a politically restricted post? www.llandybie.org.uk/_UserFiles/Files/_Minutes/135205-Minutes_021122.pdf

you'd have thought the LDs would have put up someone there, it's usually a pretty good area for them. Labour wouldn't normally be close in any election in Chorleywood
