There is a vacancy in Abbots Langley West ward of Abbots Langley PC following the death of Cllr John Swallow (LD) on the 13th December. Reported in a 'Focus' leaflet that's just arrived.

Assuming it is called, a by-election to fill the vacancy will occur 2 May.

Much to my surprise no-one called an election and the vacancy will be filled by co-option (at the council's meeting on 15 May).

Reported locally as "the first councillor to be elected in 13 years" though I suspect - like many - they are making the mistake of thinking that members elected unopposed have not been elected. But, presumably, the first contested election since 2011.

Thats the Yeovil Independents second gain on the TC in the last few months. It’s a gain from the Conservatives, who didn’t defend their seat and I think at least quietly endorsed the Independents.

Not precisely a parish council byelection (being neither a parish, nor a byelection), but close enough. The parish of Great Torrington, in Torridge will be having an election under the Great Torrington Commons Act 1889, to elect fifteen Commons Conservators. The election will be held on 9th May (the act specifies the second Thursday of May).

Kirkburton Shelley is a Con hold. Last May the ward returned 3 Conservatives unopposed.

Dinas Powys Twyn is a PC hold.

The composition of Dinas Powys community council after the May 2022 elections (4 wards with 4 members each) was PC 14, Con 2.

The 2 Conservatives were elected in Twyn ward, but the present vacancy was caused by the resignation of Adam Cooke (PC). According to facebook, he had studied for a Masters Degree in Welsh Politics at Cardiff University and was working as a policy officer for Plaid Cymru.

Claygate, the only one parish in Elmbridge, has a byelection for four out of the ten seats. There are seven candidates, none of which are sponsored by a political party, but one describes themselves as an Independent, one has no description, and the remaining five have fashioned a slogan:

• Claygate Born, Bred, Supporting Local Residents
• Working For Claygate First - this candidate was official Conservative borough council candidate for Claygate in 2022 and 2023
• Seeing community change for the better
• Working Together For Everyone In Claygate
• One Less Council, One Less Tax

Well, I couldn't vote for "one less tax". "One tax fewer" possibly.
