You don't know that area at all do you? You have not been to either of those places have you? And you use the word 'yonks'! Oh dear. These changes ar quite recent and quite complex. Best not to comment based on such ignorance. You don't know which areas I know and don't know. As it is, my uncle lived near Penistone so I've been around Bolsover constituency, Hardwick Hall and these parts. Have you? You're just looking to get a rise out of people on here. Don't you have anything better to do? I think I know the answer to that actually. I lived at Worksop for over a decade and used a pub at Barlborough where I have friends. I have driven through it and round it for 4-decades. I live in Sheffield Heeley constituency and even at 80 can still easily walk into the adjacent NE Derbyshire constituency which I know very well indeed. Does that count?

You're 55 years older than me, so it figures that you well might know the areas a bit better. So, Carlton43 comes from Nottinghamshire....

I do not 'come from Nottinghamshire'. I was not born there, nor schooled there and worked there for only one out of eight decades. It is that sort of sweeping generalization, based on supreme ignorance, that rather annoys some of us.

Labour swept all the Clay Cross seats on NE Derbyshire district in May (when they also re-took control of the council from the Tories, despite the well known long term trends there) so unless you think there has been major "realignment" in the last few months, maybe this result has other causes?

Yes there is. carlton43 being a grumpy git about a lot of things (but not everything - many things he is happy to ignore and pass by, rather than condemn) is an efficient method of making sure his brain is still working, and is a useful social service for enabling dilly booliaks gradually to become more aware of their nincompoopisms and other inadequacies.

All sorts of weird results happen in town council and parish by-elections all the time and it's an error to read anything into them as a rule. Party labels matter less, personal factors are often very important. You will note (as is usually the case) that turnout was very low. I suspect (as is usually the case for town/parish by-elections) that most people in the town would not have been aware that there was any kind of election on.

If anyone has any genuine insight into Clay Cross or concrete analysis of the Tory win, that’d be great.

Despite my best efforts, the vacancy on Haminog ward on Llanrhystud in Ceredigion is to be filled by co-option. Did you want a contested election? (I rather doubt the council taxpayers of the area would.)

Carmarthenshire, Llanedi, Hendy. Current council: 9 PC, 3 Lab, 3 Ind, 1 Vacancy. 2022 Result: PC 508*/497*/495*/453*/397*/395*/373*, Ind 409*, Gwlad 166. Vacancy is the first PC.
Fenland, Whittlesey, North West. Current council: 9 Con, 4 Ind, 1 Vacancy. 2023 Result: 3x Con*.
Monmouthshire, Monmouth, Drybridge. I think this was a Con gain from Ind (elected unopposed in 2022), and leaves the council as 11 Ind, 5 Lab, 3 Con.
South Norfolk, Wymondham, South. Current council: 8 Con, 4 LD, 1 CCP, 1 Vacancy. 2023 result: LD 351*/298*/287*, Con 177/169/157. Vacancy is the third LD.

There is a town council election in Crewkerne, Somerset on 12/10. 2 candidates, both no description which is slightly surprising as it’s a political council- 8 Lib Dem’s, 2 Conservatives and 2 Independents elected last year. Election caused by a Lib Dem resignation. It’s a single ward parish council with an electorate of about 6000.
